Which Windows XP Newsgroup?
I know that this is a Windows 98 newsgroup and I have found massive help
here in the past. But my daughter has problems with her Windows XP . What would be a comparable group to this one where I could get similar expert help on XP? There are so many XP groups about and I can't work out which might be best. Ed |

If you're willing to go beyond usenet to look for help, I think that registering as a user with msfn.org and posting to their XP forum will probably get you more satisfaction: http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/34-windows-xp/ There are so many XP groups about and I can't work out which might be best. Just be aware that if you have a malware problem (virus, trojan, root-kit) that just posting the symptoms of what your machine is doing (or not doing) is not likely to be very useful. There are plenty of posting along the lines of "my computer is acting strangely" or "this or that program doesn't work any more" and those posts never have any sort of useful resolution because the root problem is never identified. I would recommend that you re-install XP on the computer in question. Go out and buy a new hard drive and just re-install XP on it, update it with all patches and bring it up to SP3, and then attach the current drive as a slave and copy over all the personal files. When an XP system becomes infected with something, you really can't trust that you've removed 100% of the infection or restored 100% of various registry and other files so the system is stable again. Some usenet groups to post to: alt.comp.virus alt.comp.anti-virus microsoft.public.security.virus for general questions about how to deal with specific infectors microsoft.public.windowsxp.(various) for XP-specific groups (but you probably already know that) |

There are web forums of varying degrees of help, including Microsoft's Answers forums: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...ult.aspx#tab=4 -- Glen Ventura MS MVP Oct. 2002 - Sept. 2009 CompTIA A+ http://dts-l.net/ |

snip totally Nah tis not a virus problem or such. It's just that she got Win XP and sometime ago she installed a test/evaluation copy of Windows Vista as a dual boot system. And the license expiry date for Vista has now run out and she wants to delete that Vista from her pc safely and leave XP untouched. I know this is not the right forum to ask for help, so was looking for an XP forum that might advise. Ed |

98 Guy wrote: snip totally Nah tis not a virus problem or such. Then you should read my reply more carefully. I suggest you post your question he http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/34-windows-xp/ The signal:noise ratio of the XP newsgroups here on usenet is pretty bad. It's just that she got Win XP and sometime ago she installed a test/evaluation copy of Windows Vista as a dual boot system. And the license expiry date for Vista has now run out I would think that the evaluation license key for Vista has run out long ago - as in a year or two. So why all the concern about it now? and she wants to delete that Vista from her pc safely and leave XP untouched. Again, I suggest you ask the people at msfn.org. Or just live with the computer as-is. What problem is it causing? I assume she can still boot into XP - no? |

I suggest you take her over your knee and spank the **** out of her for using such a borked up operating system. There are only TWO operating systems that work. Windows 98, and Windows 95. (maybe Windows 2000 too). That's it. XP Vista Windows 7 are all JUNK. KILL THEM..... jw, you really shouldn't be talking about his daughter's brain when yours is unable to grasp the usage of even WinXP. XP works quite well, as well as Win98 or better, and certainly better than Win95. If you think Win2K is a better OS than XP, the actual existence of your brain is suspect! ;-) -- Glen Ventura MS MVP Oct. 2002 - Sept. 2009 CompTIA A+ http://dts-l.net/ |

Found this, it *might* be helpful. http://www.istartedsomething.com/200...-boot-with-xp/ It's for a beta, but it does mention indicate that Vista's boot manager needs removal. |
