Default Too Much Restore : No memory

I have just had a warning message that I am out of disk space (Laptop, HP
Armada 1750, 4GB) on checking I find that in my _RESTORE folder is one
labelled TEMP which is 1.5GB. I can only see it using the TREE utility, not
with Windows Explorer even though I have checked the hidden files option.

How do I recover this space ?

Using Norton, are you??
This should fix you up - but you should get rid of Norton if it's installed!

Boot to DOS, using your Startup Disk (if you don't have one and can't make
one from Start | Add/Remove Programs, then download a diskmaker from
www.bootdisk.com, and create the floppy by running the file)

At the A:\ prompt, type the following commands (followed by [return])

ATTRIB -S -R -H C:\_RESTORE

REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST

When the A:\ prompt returns, remove the floppy, and reboot the PC. The
Control Files will be rebuilt, and a Restore point should be created.

Then delete the C:\OLDREST folder, and reboot again.

Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder

I see that Noel has already answered your question but perhaps I can
explain why you cannot see the contents of the _RESTORE folder in Windows
Explorer. You mention that you have gone into Explorer's Tools | Folder
Options | View and checked the box to "Show hidden files and folders" but
you also need to UNcheck the box "Hide Protected operating system files".

Get rid of/rename the _RESTORE folder using Noel's recipe remembering to
delete the renamed folder when back in Win Me (don't try doing this from
DOS it takes too long). The folder will automatically be recreated and
the control files rebuilt when you remove the boot floppy and boot back
into Win Me. Don't forget to then set the space allocated to the folder
to suit your requirements.

System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and adjust the restore
slider to your preferred setting. A figure of 200MB (the minimum) or
perhaps one notch above this is normally more than adequate for day to day
use allowing around a week of checkpoints to be available although
increasing this to perhaps 400-600MB for a few days during periods of
large installs such Microsoft Office is advisable.

It might now be a good time to test that system restore is working
correctly. You can do this by performing the following test.
a) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file.
b) Create a manual checkpoint
Could you create a checkpoint?
c) Delete the shortcut
d) Restore your PC to the checkpoint you created.
Was the shortcut restored? Did you see any error messages?
e) Reboot your PC
Was the checkpoint retained?

All Fixed, I switched off the restore and rebooted which emptied the TEMP
folder and then switched the restore back on.

You're one of the lucky few, then!
Usually, when the archive is overstuffed in that way, a simple reset such as
you did, doesn't work - presumably because of file corruption within the
archive.

Good Luck
