Default "search for files or folders" disabled

Hi,

Suddenly I find that "search for files or folders" is disabled. The
dialog box accepts input, and the "search now" button seems to click,
but no results are shown.

Any ideas?

Suddenly? - And recently?

In which case it might be worth running System Restore and rolling back to
the last time it worked properly - unless you've recently installed new
hardware/software which may coincide with the 'sudden' problem.

Thanks, Mart. That might have been helpful, but I don't have System

Yes, suddenly, in the past few days. Recently installed a cable modem,
Mozilla Thunderbird, and various shareware backup programs which I've
subsequently uninstalled.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Have you perhaps used TweakUI and inadvertently unchecked the box "Search
Results" on the Desktop tab? If yes, recheck the box and click Apply.

On further thoughts - if Richard hasn't got TweakUI installed, then that
*may* even work towards a solution by installing it and toggling that
switch. It might just restore the search feature. Ironic note:- Kolbear's
item 3) g

You can (still) download TweakUI from Microsoft at :-
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstati.../nttweakui.asp
Be sure to read the installation instructions carefully!

Following warnings/notes reproduced with acknowledgement to the late
Koldbear

1) Do *not* change the first icon from "My Documents" on the Desktop tab
2) Do *not* uncheck: Search Results on the Desktop tab
3) Do *not* hide the Tweak UI icon on the Control Panel tab
4) Do *not* uncheck: Show Control Panel on Start Menu on the IE tab
5) Do *not* uncheck: Shell enhancements on the IE tab
6) To move "My Documents" folder, right-click on the Folder, and click
Properties.

wow, problem solved. thanks very much.

I was messing with TweakUI, and since I didn't have an icon for search
on my desktop, and don't want one, may well have unticked it. And I
did look in there, but since search doen't seem anything to do with
what understand to be the desktop, I would have missed it.

Very helpful. Thanks again.

I'm pleased to read that you not only solved your problem but were also
honest enough to admit that you made the change that caused it. Your
reason for unchecking it was quite logical and understandable however one
needs to be very careful when using TweakUI (see Mart's last post for some
of those reasons). You won't believe how many users with search problems
claim not to have unchecked that entry and for it to have happened behind
their back. :-)
