Default Device Manager Problem

Under "other devices" I have a question mark.
It shows also PCI CARD and PC MASS STORAGE CONTROLLER with a yellow question
mark.
I went into safe mode and reviewed the entire list under Device Manager,
couldn't see any duplicated items or parts no longer in the system.
My CD-RW looks ok but when I insert a CD to read nothing happened.

Here what I have under the hood:

2. If you mean you cannot read the CD directory via
Explorer, the RW drive may be dead (cheaply and
easily replaced) or this particular CD may have become
damaged (test by trying to read a different CD.)

1. Standard cure for driver error (indicated by Yellow
flag with question mark) is to / Remove this device and
reboot so that the BIOS detects them as "new" and
Windows prompts you to supply drivers. (You may have to
know the filepath to the right driver; if on CD, you need
a working CD drive.)

I'd delete the items with a ? and then reboot and let Windows detect and
load the drivers for them.

Go to Start-Run and type "msinfo32.exe".

What does it tell you about your "problem devices"?

You could also try PCItree:
http://www.pcitree.de/

Here is the most recent list of PCI devices by Vendor ID:

I removed the flagged devices and rebooted; I also removed the CD-RW from the
DEvice Manager; when I rebooted Windows asked me to supply the drivers for
the PCI CARD and for the PC MASS STORAGE; what disks should I use ? The Asus
disk, the Yamaha or WIndows98 SE disk ? Sorry but I'm just trying to learn
things.
I wasn't able to read the CD directory but under "My Computer" it was
showing the icon regarding the software on the CD. I don't think the CD is
spinning properly.

Thanks

Hmm. That's a tough article to look at. It still may apply to you. You
must discover what these mal-installed drivers are supposed to be & get
them installed properly.

|
| (3) (A)The current drive letter: E: and Auto-insert Notifications &
DMA
| boxes are checked.

What about "Disconnect"? Mine is checked, & here is it's blurb...
"This option is for SCSI devices only. This option is enabled by default
and should not be changed if your SCSI device works properly."

| (B) In the registry key shows: No drive Type Auto Run, Data: 5f00 00
00.

Change it to... 9D..., which "is (a) better value, allows CD autorun,
suppresses HD autorun"...

(1) R-Clk "NoDriveTypeAutoRun", & select "Modify"
(2) DEL key once to remove "5f"
(3) Type 9d, & hit ENTER

I think that should fix your CD-ROM, which likely is not one of the
problem devices at all.

....snip

I do see the word "unknown" up there, where the device type normally
appears. Is this something you plug in/out of a PCI connector? Those
could be tough to install. I think sequence is important for some,
whether to plug it in first or to install the drivers first.

Seems to be an "Unknown", though the word, you say, does not appear in
Device Manager. And it's saying the driver is not installed. That seems
to be a standard, important-sounding device that comes with Windows,
though. I guess point it to the Windows Installation CD for this one, to
answer your question to Phillipson.

This one has drivers, but Windows doesn't like them! A pity you have
THREE bad devices to deal with at once! This one also seems to be native
Windows files. Go for the Windows Installation CD first.
