I have 100s of email messages on my MEcomputer. How do I transfer them to my
XPComputer. I am trying to copy them to my portable hard drive. The
import/export function doesn't get me there.

The export function in OE only exports to Office I believe.

MG| Free Download - Outlook Express Freebie Backup 2.9.0.3:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Outlook_Ex...kup_d4179.html

That can (should) be able to restore if it is the application that I believe
it is or a copy of the application that it once was. (Long story... The copy
that I have is no longer supported or allowed to be downloaded by the author
but I think that this, the above, is a clone of it from another author but
runs the same.)

You'll want it installed on both PCs of course, export on the ME box and
then import it on the XP box - make sure you don't have any email accounts
or the likes already set in the XP box and it /may/ need to have the restore
paths altered or a different path chosen in OE on the XP system. (Maint.
tab - store folder button.)

As well as Galen's excellent suggestion, you may wish to be aware of a
possible workaround in the event of any potential issues which you *may*
encounter should you 'lose' a Local Folder in the process.

"OLEXP: You Cannot Import a Single .dbx Message File"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262118/EN-US/

Hope you don't need it, but it's offered as the 'piece of string' to add to
Galen's 'belt and braces'.

Use the XP Files And Settings Transfer (FAST) wizard. You can do this
using your XP CD and then running the FAST wizard on your Win Me machine.
For more details see Gary Woodruff's article at Aumha -

Yuk! To import/add a dbx file to an existing store folder blow away
folders.dbx! Quite amazing since the KB doesn't mention the downside
which includes:
1) Loss of local folder tree structure
2) Loss of indication as to which messages have been read and which not
3) Loss of the newsgroup list on all news accounts (although this can
often be beneficial due to the number of groups on many Usenet servers).
I'm sure there's at least one more but can't remember it at the moment

Personally I prefer the method of creating a new dummy local folder file,
lets call it xxxx, in the existing store and copying a message to it. Now
stop OE, locate the file xxxx.dbx in the store and delete it. Move the
dbx file (local folder) you wish to add to the store and rename it
xxxx.dbx. Reopen OE and the local folder xxxx should now contain the
messages of the added dbx file.

Not sure if you were referring to my 'piece of string' Mike, or Galen's
'belt and braces. I must admit that I've never tried "Outlook Express
Freebie Backup 2.9.0.3:" - hence my concern should anything get missed or
lost.

And following steps 3 & 4 of the KB article would (should) prevent a "folder
blow away".

However, I would certainly concur with your "preferred" method (elsewhere in
THIS post) of copying/recovering emails - especially newsgroups. A method
which you and I have discussed and used quite successfully, on several
occasions.

'Tis a wondrous method with FAST. I like the backup functionality as an
application so my own response is based on my own needs but has been pretty
good to me so far. The application was at OEhelp.com (I think) and then they
took it offline. You could see where it was (not very exciting) he
http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx The one I pointed to is a clone
of it from someone else I do believe, the original's likely still online I
was asked to no longer hand out links to it so I don't.

Mart,

I was referring to the KB method of importing a dbx file which works by
blowing away folders.dbx so that when OE next starts it automatically
scans the message store and builds a new folders.dbx. The new folders.dbx
includes all the dbx files in the message store including the one the user
wants to import. Step 4 is blowing away folders.dbx. Once renamed OE
will create a new folders.dbx when next started (step 5) but this then
means the loss of the folder tree structure, the need to repair rules,
check which message are unread (all NG messages are now marked as unread),
etc., etc.

Ooops! Sorry Mike - I completely misread the KB article and saw what I
wanted to see and not what was actually written g

Yep, I'll go along with "Yuk!" - pretty much sums it up.

Apologies and will no longer indulge in 'speed-reading' which can be almost
just as hazardous as doing your own proof-reading.

A bit like the weather which here is bl$$dy cold. I've succumbed and
actually put the heating on today!

Apologies? Don't worry about your speed-reading. My problem is my typing
whether at speed or at a leisurely pace. On reading my posts I'm slowly
coming to the realisation that I've become dyslexic in my old age. vbg
