Default maximizing ram w/ ME?

Ok, new here so patience please.
What i have - Hp pavilion 733MHZ celeron, originally had 64MB RAM- uped it
to 256MB by removing 64MB stick and installed 2 sticks @ 128MB each.(PC100)
I'm not sure of my motherboard specs at this time. running Windows ME of
course
My concern is that i still continually 'lock-up' my system. have
noticed it more since i upgraded to high speed cable vs dial-up. am now
streaming music while workin applications such as MS Works, or other
designing programs. I was informed that ME does not recognize more than 64MB,
but it shows the whole 256MB installed. the other posts talked of 1GB or more
issues, am I just expecting too much from my lil system or is there anyway to
open up all my memory? as i didn't see alot of difference when i installed
the more RAM.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanx in advanced.

The amount of installed ram is not your issue, but

"am now streaming music while workin applications such as MS Works, or other
designing programs. "

may well be!

I suspect this use is quite a stress for this now rather primitive hardware
system.
Test by exercising each application alone, and then in the several
combinations to determine which combination is causing the "lockup".
If this app use is normal and desired for you, I recommend obtaining faster,
more powrful hardware, esp. as it is very inexpensive just now (in the USA).
512 MB- 1 GB of memory, if supported by the mainboard / chipset, would
better support your simultaneous use of these applications.
And let Windows manage the swapfile.

If you install more than 512 MB,

"You may find the following KB articles of interest especially the first
where
you will see why it is essential to limit your vcache to 512MB. Do this as
follows:
To limit vcache, open system.ini and add the lines
[VCache]
MaxFileCache=512000
Note that this will still mean that all of your memory is available to
applications but is simply limiting the amount used as virtual cache memory.

MS KB Q253912 - ""Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM
Installed" (http://support.microsoft.com/support.../q253/9/12.asp).
The reason is that allocating more than 512MB of RAM to vcache will exhaust
all
available upper addresses and thus prevent them being used for other
purposes.

Win Me can access and use up to 2GB although a couple of other factors may
limit the maximum usable to 1.5GB or even 1GB in some circumstances. See MS
KB
Q304943 - "Computer May Reboot Continuously with More Than 1.5 GB of RAM"

Some uses may also experience problems with hibernation when more than 192MB
of
RAM is installed - see MS KB Q296773 - "Computer May Not Hibernate with More
Than 192 MB of Memory"

and finish with Jim Eshelman's article on memory management at
http://www.aumha.org/a/memmgmt.htm.

Been awhile but did you take out PC133 and put in PC100?

running Windows ME of course

You'd be surprised how many people read the newsgroup name and decide it's
a variation of "My Windows".

My concern is that i still continually 'lock-up' my system.

So the system was locking up before the upgrade then(?)

have
noticed it more since i upgraded to high speed cable vs dial-up. am

My first suspect would be the "other designing programs" as instigator.

I was informed that ME does not recognize
more than 64MB,

Incorrect, you may have to change a parameter at 512M then another after
1G but that's it.

am I just expecting too much from
my lil system

Sounds like a nice workable system.

Does your system just freeze solid or does it slow down before it locks
up.

I don't know which model of Pavilion that is. My HP Pavilion 6745C is
slower, but can accept up to 512KB of RAM (two 256KB modules); I believe
that is a limitation of my current BIOS. I also know that the multimedia
hardware, located on the motherboard, is rather limited for the current
multimedia operations available. My computer is four years old, with some
flakiness induced by a power supply fan failure; overheated before I
realized it. When I replace it, the new computer will be closer to state-of-
the-art for multimedia operation.

That can put a pretty heavy load on the machine, depending on which
specific application programs you are using for each of these tasks.

I was informed that ME does not recognize more than 64MB,

No. You were *misinformed*. Windows Me will recognize all the RAM
you can provide it, up to at least 1 gb and in some instances up to
1.5 gb. There is a configuration setting that needs to be entered
when using more than 512 mb of RAM with Windows 95/98/Me and there are
hardware related issues that can arise when you go beyond 1 gb of RAM
with those Windows versions. I do not know of any instance where
someone has successfully used Windows 95/98/Me on a machine with more
than 1.5 gb of RAM installed and avaialable to Windows.

but it shows the whole 256MB installed. the other posts talked of 1GB or more

You should have seen a pretty substantial boost in performance when
you went from 64 mb to 256 mb of RAM with Windows Me *unless* your
machine is so heavily loaded that it is still using the swap file
extensively.

Use the System Monitor utility that comes with Windows (in Accessories
- System Tools) and use Edit - Add to configure it to track "Memory
Manager - Swap File In Use". If that value gets up over 20 mb on any
sort of a regular basis then your system would benefit from the
addition of even more RAM if that is possible.

Good luck

well i am maxing out w/ the music and such, may upgrade to the 512MG max or
just give this pc to my lil girl and build daddy a bigger and badder one. if
i go the build route, may see you all agian real soon. thanx again J.

One other thing to consider is a CPU upgrade if your motherboard will
support it. A Celeron CPU has a double-handicap over a Pentium-III CPU of
the same speed. The first handicap is that the FSB (Front System Bus) clock
speed is slower than a PIII CPU, and the second is that the Celeron has only
half the onboard cache memory that a PIII CPU does.
