Default Improve on NAV2004?

I have just installed Norton AntiVirus 2004 on my ageing Windows 98
system (64Kb RAM, PII 266MHz). It has slowed down dramatically
compared with the Norton AntiVirus 2000 I had on previously.

Can anyone recommend a reasonable antivirus that will not slow down my
old system too much?

Would I be opening myself up to many dangers if I returned to NAV
2000?

Thanks, Jim

Norton is bloatware and the newer versions will not work properly on Windows
ME for instance.

I would suggest you go to Windows Update and find the link to download the
free EZ Armor LE antivirus and firewall. It combines EZ Trust antivirus and
the latest free Zone Alarm.

I have Zone Alarm Pro, so downloaded it unopened and then picked out just
the antivirus proggie to install.....

Or there is AVG that is at www.grisoft.com and it is free....but I would
take EZ Trust over it. Daily updates is one big reason.

Jim,

Forget about Norton AV.

Some good alternatives a

Avast
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

AVG
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/1/

eTrust EZAntivirus (You can still get a free 12 month license at the
following link). I use it on a P90 box with 64MB RAM running Windows
98. Just install the AV program if you already have a software firewall.

I've been using F-Prot for Windows on all of my systems except 1 for
several years. It's small, doesn't use many resources and has almost
daily updates that are easy run.

It costs $29.00USD and best of all, for personal users, you can install it
on more than 1 system.

YES! the engine in NAV 2000 and 2001 is outdated.

Norton 2002 seems to have all of the important features of NAV 2003 and
2004 without all of Symantec's registration paranoia BS. All of the
important files get updated to NAV 2003 when you run Live Update. NAV 2002
runs faster than the newer versions but it's still a resource and space
hog!

I just ran Live Update on my one system that I still use NAV on and it
added over 100 new files to my system

I've renewed my subscription to NAV 2002 twice but when it runs out in
several weeks it's history.

I think NOD32 is recognised as having the best protection for the smallest
footprint. Kaspersky is also a very good product for virus and malware,
and would no doubt not slow your system down as much as NAV.

eTrust antivirus, hands down, the best in my opinion.
