Default USB hub question

I'm out of USB ports so I need to buy a hub. My question is, should I
get USB 2.0 or 1.1? I'm pretty sure my circa 1999 PC's USB ports are
version 1.1 (is there a way to verify this?). Will 2.0 hubs work on
Windows 98 with 1.1 ports?

You may wonder why I want a 2.0 hub if I have 1.1 ports. The answer is
because I plan to replace my PC later this year with a new one that'll
have USB 2.0. I'll still need the hub though because of all the devices
I'll need to connect (2 PDA's, a digital camera, and a scanner).

Any USB2.0 gizmo should work fine with USB 1 stuff. It will work at
USB 1 speeds, of course.

'Chuck',

To verify whether or not you have USB 1.1 or 2.0 visit this site.

You need 98SE as a bare minimum for third party driver support for USB 2.0.

Thanks. I'm not concerned about the additional speed of 2.0. I just want
to be sure the harware is compatible. Since my OP I purchased a 2.0 mini
hub and got it working after much frustration. I spent about 4 hours as
the proud owner of a brand new "unknown device" in my device manager. I
kept search for the "free" drivers that the manual said was available on
MS's web site and didn't find them. I tried everything under the son to
get that device discovered properly. After all that time I decided to
unplug the hub and just try connecting my PDA directly into the 6 ft
extension cable and to my surprise, that didn't work!!! I should have
tried that right from the start - doh! Turns out the problem had nothing
to do with missing drivers. It was a bad usb extension cable! Plugging
the hub right into the USB port worked. It detected the hardware and
loaded the generic hub driver immediately. Note to self - remember to
look for the obvious first! I took the whole package back to store where
I bought it and exchanged it for one that had a good cable.
