Default REPAIRING A Corrupted Windows (not internet) Explorer

Hello, I was wondering if there is anyway to repair one of the corrupted
files in Window Explorer in WIN 98 without having to completly re-install. I
have switched out my "explorer.exe" file so that is not the problem, I'm
pretty sure it is not a corrupted registry problem either, as i have tested
that. I assume Explorer.exe is in a program (along with several other files
and file types) to manage files in WIN98. Does anyone know what these other
files types are ie .DLL or .DAT etc. Or can some one tell me where I might
be able to access some site that will give me this answer. Thank you very
much in advance.

Instead of asking us how to check something, provide complete details on
what is happening and let us try to figure out what to do. If there are
error messages, provide them verbatim.

What is the problem you are having, if any? Any error message? Then,
click the Details button, R-Clk inside the message, & post it. BUT, we
DON'T want to see register contents!

"START button, Run, MSInfo32, Tools tab, IE Repair Tool".

E & IE are closely related. They share .DLLs. However, I'm not sure it
does all that much, and some do report it crashes on their machine,
apparently in an orderly manner. It does produce a rather long "Fix IE
Log.txt" in C:\Windows. If it crashes, a reinstall of IE is indicated.

But to have a look at Explorer's ton of .DLLs..

What file is corrupted or missing? How do you know it's corrupted or
missing?

Default REPAIRING A Corrupted Windows (not internet) Explorer

Hello, I was wondering if there is anyway to repair one of the corrupted
files in Window Explorer in WIN 98 without having to completly re-install.

Yes - if you can identify which file you need to replace!

You can use Extract /? to see the syntax used to extract replacement
files from the Windows .cab set, but these may be older than the ones
on your PC (think patches, per-system uprades e.g. IE, DirectX etc.)

See also http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/dllhell.htm

Included in the above are tips on checking Scandisk and av logs to see
if any relevant files were "fixed" or "cleaned"; a good starting
point, as often there will be residual damage to such files.

But before doing that, check hardware and do a formal virus scan.
Most hardware errors are random, but a failing HD can be the
exception; if a bad sector lies within a particular file, the crash
pattern may stay consistent with a problem within that file.

See http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/bthink.htm

Also, consider that the "Explorer" issues may be due to something
integrated withv Explorer. Start by turning off BHOs (Browser Helper
Objects) within IE, which can affect Windows Explorer too; go Tools,
Options, Advanced in IE 6 (can't do this in older IE) and UNcheck
"Enable third-party browser enhancements".

Also, turn OFF "View as Web Page" and Active Desktop, and thus any
script or HTML baggage and/or attacks that these may bring. You can
also manage the startup axis via MSConfig, NirSoft's startup manager,
or (less reversibly) HiJackThis.

Lastly, drill into shell extensions using NirSoft's Shell Extension
Viewer, from http://www.nirsoft.net
