Default Corrupted partition

My disk partition appears to be corrupted. I started =0A=
getting the following message when I tried to boot up: =0A=
=0A=
The following file is missing or corrupted: a:\ifshlp.sys =0A=
=0A=
The following file is missing or corrupted: =0A=
a\system\wmm32.vxd =0A=
=0A=
Type the name of the Windows loader (e.g., C:=0A=
\windows\system\vmm32.vxd) =0A=
a =0A=
=0A=
I found KB article 258471 which addresses the above error =0A=
messages, but I was unable to get into Windows. =0A=
=0A=
I used the the system restoration disk provided with my PC =0A=
to try and get into the manual install mode. It kicked me =0A=
out of manual install into DOS and told me that I needed =0A=
to run fdisk. I used fdisk to look at the drive =0A=
partitions. They are as follows: =0A=
=0A=
Partition Status Type Mbytes =0A=
1 A NonDos 12995 =0A=
2 NonDos 752 =0A=
3 NonDos 5346 =0A=
=0A=
I know from the partition sizes that partition 1 is the =0A=
Windows partition. Partition 2 and 3 are Linux used by =0A=
Linux, which is working just fine. Linux shows the =0A=
partitions are all FAT32. =0A=
=0A=
I really don't want to have to blow everything away away =0A=
to fix this, and I'm not sure that I can do a full =0A=
reinstall of Win Me from Gateway's system retore disks. =0A=
=0A=
How can I fix my partitions so that Windows will run? =0A=
=0A=

Your partition type numbers (which Linux ignores) are wrong. Use Linux fdisk
or cfdisk to set the type/system id of the Windows partition to 0C.

You were absolutely correct. I used cfdisk in Linux to
chnage the partiton type and Win ME booted right up. I
very much appreciate the suggestion.

So I'm back to being able to dual boot my system. Two
issues:

1. Windows Explorer doesn't seem to see the partitions.
It seems to think that the C: drive is all 20G.

2. I tried to install Win XP Home upgrade and it bombed
out when it did the first reboot into setup because it
thinks that the C: drive is corrupted.

Any suggestions?

I used cfdisk under Linux to change the drive type for the =0A=
two Linux partitions to FAT32 and Windows now sees a D and =0A=
E drive (the two Linux partitions), but sees them as =0A=
unformated. Windows Explorer and ScanDisk still see the =0A=
Windows partition as having a total of 18.6G, which is the =0A=
total capacity of the disk, including the D: and E: =0A=
partitions. =0A=
=0A=
XP still will not install. It sees C: as being corrupted. =0A=
Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, the drive C: corruption issue is a problem
with drive overlay programs that were used with older
motherboards to support large disk drives.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;315679&Product=winxp

No tools available from Western Digital would remove the
overlay program. Only alternative was to erase the hard
drive to get rid of overlay program and then partiton,
format, do a clean install of XP and then reinstall
everything else. Very ugly solution.

Bottom line is that the transition from Win Me to Win XP
may be very, very painful.
