Default Icons outside the Desktop dimensions

hallo

some icons are currently out the Desktop
(that is out the screen dimensions)

i can't increase the resolution from the Control Panel
so to be able to "see" them
(i'm at 1024x768 that is the maximum allowed
by the Control Panel screen settings)

if i right click on the empty Desktot
I can dispose the icon by name, date ecc...
but so doing I will scramble my current disposition
(I currently have more the 80 icons on the Desktop)

so how to "catch" the icons outside the Desktop
and place them inside?

Have you tried starting in safe mode to see if it will appear? If it does,
then move it.

1. Get an Icon-position-saver (EZdesk is what I use)
2. run it, and save the current settings
3. Make a folder on the desktop - call it something like "!stray icons"
(it doesn't matter what you call it; I suggest something starting with
"!" because it will be easy to find)
4. Do the sort-by-name thing you know how to do (I take it "dispose"
means "position")
5. drag the icons you've got back *into the new folder* (i. e. so they
don't appear on the desktop any more)
6. Repeat 4 and 5 if necessary, if there are a _lot_ of these icons. You
may also have to make some other folders, and drag other icons into
them, if 80+ won't fit on the screen
7. Move the new folder to somewhere on the screen that was empty (such
as where you created it at 3)
8. run the position-saver to restore the positions (it won't put back
ones that are no longer on the desktop, or move anything that wasn't
there when it was run - at least, EZdesk won't)
9. Open the temporary folder, and drag the icons to where you want them
10. Delete the (now-empty) temporary folder
11. run the position-saver *again* to store all the new positions so you
don't lose them again!

How did you manage to get icons outside the screen area? Or, are they
really just underneath other icons?

Doing that would screw up the position of his other 80+ icons - hence my
suggestion of EZdesk (or alternative) to store them first. (As would
"Arrange icons by name", which is what I think he means by "dispose".)

with 'dispose' i mean 'where i have put them'

this is a pic
http://www.iouppo.com/lite/pic/8daee...cd44db0f63.jpg

i presume they went outside because they were more than one hundred and
ther was non more space

i've read your tricks and i will take a decision...

Has the Registry stored their name and their x,y coordinates anywhere?

I count 78 there (-:

Interesting.

Looking at your picture, you might find it worth collecting together
some of your groups into new folders anyway. But I understand if you
don't wish to.

I presume it does, but I don't know where.

You can get EZdesk from
http://files.brothersoft.com/desktop...zDesk_7419.zip
(83.5 kB!) (Unzip to a temporary directory, then run EZsetup.)
(In theory, shareware, but all links to the creator - Melissa Nguyen -
seem to be broken, so it's difficult to pay for it.) This will allow you
to save a set of icon positions for each resolution you use. (The paid
version lets you save several sets, but as I said you can't pay for it.)

I currently have 125 icons (out of a possible 130 in aligned grid) on
a 1024x768 desktop. Some call me crazy too, but I find it easier to
point-and-click a desktop icon than burrow through a menu hierarchy
from the START button.

Two observations:

1. You can save (as often as you like) and restore the desktop icon
layout with a number of utilities. Back in May 2010 I started a
thread on where the desktop icons were stored, as I faced the same
problem you do. On the recommendation of Thanatoid and Glen Ventura
(their links reproduced below), I downloaded Icon_restore and have
been happily using it ever since. It adds two new commands to the "My
Computer" rt-click menu - "save desktop icon layout" and "restore
desktop icon layout".

http://www.pcnineoneone.com/tweaks/layout.zip

or

http://users.rcn.com/taylotr/icon_restore.html

2. All your desktop icons will appear in the C:\Windows\Desktop
folder. Prior to installing the layout saver, I found the only method
of retrieving those pesky out-of-sight icons was to:

.. view the above folder in Windoze Exploder
.. create a temp folder under the above (this will appear on your
desktop - on the desktop move it to a spot where you won't have an
icon in the final layout.
.. identify all those in the folder list that were out of view (by
comparing to your desktop)
.. drag those to the temp folder
.. close exploder, return to desktop, open the temp folder by
double-clicking (yes, I know that just reopens Exploder, but *my*
Exploder is configured to open default in "details" view, full-screen,
and the double-clicked desktop folder opens in icon view, and not
full-screen - just a tad handier.)
.. drag the icons from the temp folder back to your desktop
.. delete the temp folder.
.. INSTALL AND RUN THE ICON SAVER, AND SAVE THE LAYOUT.

There wil be some who pooh-pooh the whole idea of a desktop full of
icons, but that's *our* choice, right? Some may also have a simpler
way of reaching those out-of-sight icons, but the above works for me.

You might want to consider putting them on one or more toolbars. Maybe make
another taskbar too for the toolbars.

(48 here - on a netbook I've only been using a couple of years! My old
98 laptop has a lot more.)

Thanatoid poured scorn on my EZdesk suggestion, so it must have
something going for it (-:. It puts something in the tray, which when
right-clicked produces a menu which includes Save Desktop Layout and
Restore Desktop Layout - much the same, in effect.
[]
2. All your desktop icons will appear in the C:\Windows\Desktop
folder. Prior to installing the layout saver, I found the only method

icon in the final layout.

My way was just to right-click on an empty spot on the desktop and
select New Folder, but it has the same effect. Except I had to resort
to either switching resolution or arrange-icons-by-name, so your method
is better!
[]
. INSTALL AND RUN THE ICON SAVER, AND SAVE THE LAYOUT.

Definitely!

There wil be some who pooh-pooh the whole idea of a desktop full of
icons, but that's *our* choice, right? Some may also have a simpler

Agreed.
