My pc crashed and I reloaded w98 but can't reload most all other software because I am no longer the Administrator of my own PC??? W98 peer-to-peer networked with another pc (no crash there). No passwords ever, windows logon only.

Use Google to find: tweakui + "windows 98" and use its
Automatic logon setting.

The Microsoft utility, TweakUI, has that setting, I think
under the Boot tab.

I downloaded the "tweakUI" and checked the auto logon. No difference.

When I try to update IE (just 1 example) I get "To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group"

It's my PC why is this happening. There is no other user, password, network policy...nothing. What's flagging this???

I appreciate any help.

Right click Network Neighborhood on the desktop.
Click Properties Configuration tab Client for MS Networks =
Properties button.
Uncheck "Log on to Windows NT domain".
Put a tic next to "Logon and restore network connections".
Click Ok Ok and reboot.

This is the way it's always been set up. There's something else causing Microsoft and other software to need admin status and for some reason I'm no longer it????

I appreciate teh help so far. I still need more suggestions - Thanks

Don't know if this is it... but open control panel and
click on network. In the Configuration highlight each
entry in the window and select "Windows Logon" below. Do
this to each entry in the upper list.

Can you start up in Safe Mode? If so, search for any .pwl and delete =
them.
How to Prevent a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me Logon Prompt at =

*Note: If you have user profiles this will not work as stated in the =
article and you will have to perform the steps in the link provided in =
the article for user profiles.
It has also been advised that you do not use the article Q135586, which =
has a link included in the article. Its purpose is =E2=80=9Cto clear the =
User Name logon box so it is blank each time you start Windows=E2=80=9D, =
it is not meant to prevent the logon box from prompting you for a =

Instead if you have TweakUI installed, check to make sure the =
=E2=80=9CClear Last User At Logon=E2=80=9D check box is not checked. Go =
to Start Settings Control Panel, double click Tweak UI, click the =
Paranoia tab, if the box is checked, uncheck it.

Did you install a Firewall or some security software?
Try MS update Troubleshooting site.
