Default Win98 Slow Start-up

My windows98 takes nearly 20 minutes to start up. I don't
really know how to describe it, but at the start-up
screen, that little bar thing at the bottom slows almost
to a crawl. As I said before, the computer takes nearly 20
minutes to start up, and I cannot seem to find any
information on this. I have had to erase my hard drive
several times due to various problems, and I think that it
might be cause by traces of the previous operating system
still hidden in the hardrive after formating. If enough of
these little traces come together, I'm sure it would cause
a conflict, and make the start-up slower than usual. Could
this be the problem? I could use a second opinion, and
perhaps even a way to fix this problem. For now, all I can
do is leave my computer on all day, and hope that my power
doesn't flash. Post, or e-mail your feedback please.
Thanks.

Email support can be a dangerous proposition. When a response is posted in
the newsgroup, a lot of people are going to review it and make sure that the
answer is correct or at least that it will not do any harm to your PC. When
you get an email, no one can review it to ensure it has good information.
Also, when you use a valid email address in a public newsgroup like this,
you may get tons of spam and emails with a virus attached.

You may have a bunch of programs starting on boot that don't have to be. On
my PC, if a program isn't used during each computing session, I don't start
it on boot.

To cut back on the number of programs starting at boot, check the programs
themselves for an option not to load. You might have to double click an
icon in the tray (others might require a right click) and then look for
preferences or options. If you cannot find an option, look for the program
in the following start up points and remove the reference to it:

Start up folder on the start menu, the load= and run= lines in the win.ini
and these registry run keys (use regedit.exe):

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce

4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce

5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServices

6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
RunServicesOnce

7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
RunOnce\Setup

There is a freeware program that makes this process a lot easier to manage:
Startup Manager,
http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/startupcpl/

You can use msconfig.exe, startup tab, to disable programs; however, by
doing so, you may lessen its value as a troubleshooting tool. There might
be some double entries in msconfig--leave those for your AntiVirus program
and load power profile alone as they are required. If you disable an entry
in msconfig or remove it from the start up point and the program loads again
after a reboot, that is an indication that you missed an option on the
program itself. If you don't know what an entry is, check he
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm

You can get to the boot menu by holding down the ctrl key after the memory
count occurs. Select a logged boot and this creates a bootlog of what goes
on during the boot process. This program will help you analyze the bootlog:
Boot Log Analyzer,
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...2895&fileidx=1

Load Failures Listed in the Bootlog.txt File 127970
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=127970

If you continue to have boot problems, post back to this thread.
