Default Can't enable File and Print Sharing due to missing dll's

I am trying to enable File and Print Sharing on my Win98 desktop, to share a
folder with my new notebook. When I click on the button to enable in network
neighborhood, it asks me to put in my Win98 SE CD. When I do, it then gives
me messages for 6 files that are 'missing'. They a secur32.dll,
ndis.vxd, ndis2sup.vxd, ndiswmi,sys, vnetbios.vxd, and vserver.vxd. I
checked and they are not on the CD. I can't find any info anywhere on how to
obtain and install these! Can someone help? Thanks!

They're probably on the CD in a .cab file.

I had a simular problem but it would find what it needed
if I rebooted with the CD in the drive then went to add
what I wanted.

Thx for responses.

CJT: you were right, all the files ARE in .cab files on the CD. So now what
do I do? When I try to enable File Sharing, my pc does not find these files
on the CD. But I know they're there. Are they corrupt? Do I copy them to
somewhere on my pc? Replace old files with them? Not sure how to proceed.

Ghostly, I tried rebooting with the CD. Wasn't sure what you meant - did
you mean reboot FROM the CD? When I did this, it gave me choices: start
with cd's Setup, start with CD support, or start without CD support. I tried
all except setup, and got the DOS A:\ prompt.
Since that didn't look right, I next rebooted from the Hard Disk, not from
the cd. File sharing then gave me the same error, that it couldn't find
these dll's.

thanks,
Lori

When it says the dll files are not found, there should be a way to
browse to another location -- if you use that to browse to where the
cab files are, it should then load the dll (and other) files.

It's been a while since I've gone through that, so I don't recall the
precise keystroke/mouse sequences involved.

If it doesn't let you browse for a new location, you should still be
able to type in the path where the .cab files are located in the
"location to search" (or whatever it's called).

As I recall, you may then have to browse back to where your other files
are -- it's a lousy procedure, but eventually it _can_ be made to work.
I've found it's better to do it via the "Find New Hardware" option in
My Computer - Control Panel rather than the popup at boot time, because
in the former the "Find" command is available in the "Start" menu and
that can be useful during the procedure.

HTH.

Sorry, I'm not sure at which point you mean to 'Add New Hardware'. Do you
mean to do this instead of the Network Neighborhood to enable File Sharing?
Or do you mean to do this to search for the missing dll's? When would I use
the Find? And I think you mean to keep the Win98 CD in during this, but just
not sure when.

During 'enable file sharing', windows does not give me an option to browse
for those files. It gives me the dreaded red X pop-up, saying there was an
error. The only option it gives me is to skip this file, or to cancel.

Thanks,
Lori

I was thinking the problem arose while trying to add the NIC -- I guess
I lost track of the thread.

There's an option in msinfo32 under the "Tools" menu "System File
Checker" to extract files from the .cab files. That might allow you to
extract the files you need and put them where they belong (probably
\windows\system).

Beyond that, perhaps a Windows expert (I'm _not_ one!) might be able to
help.

Thanks, I used SFC and was able to enable file sharing!! FINALLY. It was a
bit tricky, as for some reason the address it was looking for on the CD was
invalid.
Now I just have to figure out why I can't see my shared file on my
notebook... I will look through these postings or perhaps post another.
Thank you for all your help!
btw, I do not want to upgrade to XP on this desktop, as I have a new
notebook with XP and don't want to go through the hassle on my old desktop.

Great. I'm glad it worked.

I have relatively little experience with XP, but ...

Usually when 98 can't see a share on an XP it's a permissions problem.
Make sure you have the same user name and password on both machines,
and make the share explicit to that user (not just "everyone").

XP ought to see a 98 share much more easily, so if it's just a matter
of moving the occasional file, you might be able to do it from the XP
notebook (push rather than pull, or vice versa).

I will look through these postings or perhaps post another.
Thank you for all your help!
