Floppy disk compatibility with XP
I have a LARGE number of 3.5" floppies (1.44Mb, 2S2D)
which I created on a Windows 98se OS. But my new HP notebook (running XP) AND my friend's Dell desktop, also running XP, give a "disk not formatted" message when they try to read from them. When put back into my Windows 98se machine they function perfectly. Suggestions? (There are way too many too make re-copying each one on the 98 machine practical.) TIA PS I also posted this query in the XP section |

The drive head is probably slightly out of alignment on the old machine.
When you use your new machine, try pushing on one corner of the disk (might take a few times) and if that doesn't work, try the other corner. If you can get it to read, copy it to your hard drive. If you need to keep the data, format the disk and then copy it back from your hard drive. You will need to replace the drive in your old machine if the heads are not aligned properly as I suspect. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "jcohen" wrote in message ... Floppy disk compatibility with XP
Hi,
Sadly your Windows 98SE machine is running on a differnt system that Windows xp was created on. A sugestion would be to get a 'memory stick' roughly about 128MB size. They work on all versions of windows some you need to install the drivers for other you dont. That's what i use because in my job i switch from diffent operating machine all the time. If you would like further assistance please don't hesitate to email me ), even if it's as simple as 'step by step' instructions. Good luck, Paul -----Original Message----- I have a LARGE number of 3.5" floppies (1.44Mb, 2S2D) which I created on a Windows 98se OS.
