Adobe Reader Security Hole
I have not followed this whole thread so I may be wrong in speaking but I
have Adobe Reader 8.0.0 installed. If I click on Help Check for Updates Preferences I can disable the automatic check for updates. -- _ct_ Shane wrote: So why have I reverted from 8.0 to 7.0.8? Because 8.0 no longer provides an option to disable checking for updates! |

"Shane" wrote in message ... My verdict on AR 8.0: ... ... ... So why have I reverted from 8.0 to 7.0.8? Because 8.0 no longer provides an option to disable checking for updates! In 7.0.8, bottom of the list in Edit/Preferences (unless in previous versions you'd already disabled it with ar speedup) is *Updates*, from whence one could turn updating off. Not there anymore! Now, to retain control of your own computer you have to block it with the firewall (maybe you can do it via the registry or some other complex method, but I haven't looked into it and that misses the point anyway). Of course, block it in the firewall and you have to disable the rule to check via the software (as opposed to going to the site), which is unnecessary in 7.0.8 - you can still manually click 'check for updates'. So unless - like some of you - you automatically trust businesses and unlike me are not control freaks, Adobe Reader 8.0 will do, I guess. But otherwise sound of lav being flushed Shane Shane, Here is where you can disable automatic updates: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Updater5\AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat Edit changing from AutoCheck1/AutoCheck to AutoCheck0/AutoCheck This is necessary, because during install you didn't read or probably missed this: http://www.intelliadmin.com/blog/200...-reader-8.html Cheers, Zee |

Ha. I'd have to reinstall it to look! But I'll take your word for it.
I won't go so far as to suggest they 'kind of' hid it, but I'm not happy about the location being changed, with the no. of settings there are being somewhat daunting it discourages seeking others out. I expect thats more consistent with increasing bloat than deliberately discouraging disabling automatic updates. I think my reaction was understandable, however I can't excuse subsequently posting erroneous conclusions as 'fact'. I'll stand by the rest of it, though. I tried Foxit some time back and found it inferior to Acrobat Reader, so I'd rather use the Adobe tool (which I suppose is obvious since I reinstalled 7.0.8, not Foxit), but I don't see a need - except perhaps to, what, 1% of users? - for all those other settings, including, of course, the vulnerable one. After all, if users are concerned with vulnerabilities, why allow any old .pdf to run javascript, open other files, run applications and do downloads in the background? Anyhow, thanks for putting me straight! Shane ctowers wrote: I have not followed this whole thread so I may be wrong in speaking but I have Adobe Reader 8.0.0 installed. Cheers. And you're right, I didn't read anything during the install. I do rather expect any necessary info to be available afterwards - possibly I have the wrong attitude there. You know, I back up beforehand, take precautions and the position that if I don't like the way it works, it's gone. Again, maybe its the attitude, maybe I'm too ready to tear into this stuff, just itching for an excuse to bin it; otoh I think I do have solid arguments. But I don't want to stray into trying to justify my own errors so I'll leave it at that. Cheers (again) Shane |

Here is where you can disable automatic updates:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Updater5\AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat Edit changing from AutoCheck1/AutoCheck to AutoCheck0/AutoCheck This is necessary, because during install you didn't read or probably missed this: http://www.intelliadmin.com/blog/200...-reader-8.html That's pretty funny! Thay guy recommends it because he thought previously you *couldn't* disable auto updates! I feel like part of a slapstick comedy routine. Shane |

He, as I did (*blush*), also failed to find:
Help Check for Updates Adobe Updater runs click the "Preferences" button... Where we can toggle on/off the auto-update feature. Let's say you were not alone. ;-) Zee "Shane" wrote in message ...
