Wayne, Jeff's suggestion should work but if you still have the problem try this: A good way is to copy the Win98 folder on the CD to your HD and then run Setup from there from Dos. Boot with the Startup disk and press enter after each of these commands: C: ( changes from A:\ to C:\) MD \Win98 (makes the folder on C Copy X:\win98 C:\win98 ( Change X to the drive letter of your CDrom, usually one more than normal) C:\win98\setup.exe (starts the install) If Setup has already created the Windows folder then it may try to install into a Windows.000 folder or a similar one. Put the cursor in the little box and change it to C:\windows. After the install anytime Windows needs something from the CD it will go to the Win98 folder instead. Very handy and fast. Sometimes this method avoids problems. Regards, Bill Watt Computer Help and Information http://home.epix.net/~bwatt/ |

Wayne, Here is part of the Win98 Setup process, in order: ________________quote____________________ After you select a Setup option, you are prompted for the locale for the Internet channels. You are then prompted to create a Windows 98 Startup disk. After you create a Windows 98 startup disk, Setup proceeds to the file copy phase. File Copy Phase During this phase, Windows 98 Setup copies the files needed to complete Setup. This involves copying files from the Windows 98 CD-ROM or shared network drive to your local hard disk. Enumeration/Detection Phase During this phase, Windows 98 Setup determines what hardware components are installed in your computer. This phase requires you to restart your computer either once or twice, depending on the type of hardware in your computer. This Setup phase can be identified by the Setting Up Hardware screen. ____________________end quote______________________ During the File Copy Phase Setup extracts the needed files from the *.CAB files. Here it uses Dos for the extraction process and it needs +/- 500k of conventional memory. The Win98 startup diskette provides that. I would create another one from Add/Remove Programs on another Win98 machine then boot with it *without* CDrom support. Or, run the Fat32ebd.exe file located on the Win98 CD in the Tools/Mtsutil/Fat32ebd folder from any Windows machine. This startup diskette does not create a Ram drive which is not needed for the install. During the install take the option to create a boot diskette even though you have one. This puts extra EBD files on the HDD. In your Windows\Command folder copy the Mem.exe file to the startup diskette. After booting with it enter Mem /c from the A:\ prompt. You will see the amount of conventional memory available. Regards, Bill Watt Computer Help and Information http://home.epix.net/~bwatt/ |

AFAIK the switch ( /is ) bypasses Scandisk during Setup, that's all. Is there more to it than that?
