Installing W98
Hi folks -
My system has been trashed by a virus so I decided to re- format and re-install Windows. Of course stupid me didn't make sure I had all the disks for my hardware. Now I cannot get any of it to work properly. I know installing W98 a system with no drivers to hand must be a common scenario so what I need to know is how do I go about it? many thanks in advance. Win98 supplies its own basic drivers for most peripherals (see inside the / Drivers folder on the CD) so we are not talking about a "system with no drivers." Can you be more specific? -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Assuming you know what hardware is on your computer, you can go to Control
Panel, Add new hardware. Do not let Windows search but look on the list of manufacturers for different components. These are the drivers that are included with Windows. If you don't see your hardware on the list, then Windows didn't ship with it and you will have to go to the manufacturer's site and download drivers and install using their instructions. Sometimes on a clean install, Windows doesn't correctly recognize your hardware so you might also take a look at the Device Manager (Control Panel, System) and see what devices might be listed there that have yellow ! marks next to them. If any are listed this way, boot into Safe mode, return to Device Manager and remove all devices in any category with ! marks. Once you have done this, exit and shut down. Then start your computer and the enumeration and detection processes may correctly detect your hardware this time and if Windows has drivers, these will be installed. Keep in mind that if your computer was manufactured after the date of the release of Windows, you will surely have several components that require drivers from the manufacturer of your computer or the component. Windows will not have these drivers. PattyL "ziggy" wrote in message ... Hi folks - My system has been trashed by a virus so I decided to re- format and re-install Windows. Installing W98
stupid question.. you dont have a spare (older comptuer)
do you? or maybe a freind? when u install windows 98, and it asks for a driver, run to the spare, look it up online, and put it on a floppy, bring to the computer your working on. really tire-some at times, but after your done reinstalling, with al lthe updates and stuff, youll remember to make a copy of a disc with all the driver on it :-P Bill and a personal tip, for viruses that wont budge, avg (anti-virus guard)(get it at www.grisoft.com) works great. I myself have used the free edition, and have not had to format in 3 years do to a bad trojan, virus. -----Original Message----- Hi folks - My system has been trashed by a virus so I decided to re- format and re-install Windows.
