Default Starting Win 98

when starting win 98 it often just locks up a refuses
to go to the win 98 screen. it just locks up and says mode
selected. the only way to get round this is to switch off,
restart in safe mode, shut down again and re boot the
computer. sometimes then it will load win 98 and sometimes
the whole cycle starts again. what can i do to start avoid
this problem?

hmm... a good tip might be that if there is nothign you
need to heavily, i would try to reinstall 98 (whatever
version you have), and then check your hardrive with
scandisk, and a defrag. these can help a ton when used.
If they fail, i dont know what to tell you.

If this is a random occurrence and does not happen on each attempt to boot,
then it's my experience that this is probably a hardware problem. Some
component on your system is failing or acting flaky.

When you boot into Windows, the same files load in the exact same order each
time so the exact same behavior should result. Another clue is that you
said that you need to "shut down" rather than restart. Not all hardware
will completely reinitialize when you restart so this also implies a
hardware problem.
