IE Running well so far
I figured she could get it from here (not sure of that, however):

I was a little too daunted by CdLSRN's long threads to finish reading through them, I'm glad she is up and running again. Anyway, a question. Last night I was installing Office97 in a laptop and I noticed a folder on the CD, "VALUPACK". In VALUPACK there is a folder IEXPLORE, and in the folder is the file IE4SETUP.EXE. A lot of 98 users may still have this disk that came with their $2200.00 PII desktops (and why not, it's a great program, and the security updates can still be downloaded from Microsoft and burned to CD). So the obvious question regarding Ginny's situation is, if she had the Office97 disk could she have uninstalled IE6, installed IE4, navigated to Microsoft.com and got IE6 going again from there? I download IE6sp1 zip from an e-mail and Gary walked my through the overinstall. I follow your advice on just about every post. Forgive me for not answering all but we spent about 24 hours just going through this. This is my third day and we are finally fixed. I think what did it is I removed my firewall.....'Trial of Transgressions'....I think that was the name. and I only use Avast resident protection (virus scanner).....not web protection or e-mail. When I start my computer any referral to ports, or joysticks, or the soundcard that I never had are gone. A few little quirks remain such as when I try to send this e-mail, I get an error message that the outbox can't be opened. So I will bypass the outbox from now on and send messages right away. IE Running well so far
It's not that important. Just a curiosity. What I'm more interested in is
that it be up to date. WU Optional Updates offered what I thought was just going to be MSXML 4.0 SP2 (or whatever the latest version is), but it turned out to include the SDK. Haven't checked to see if the file versions got updated, if I can get rid of the SDK without removing updated files, if any, etc. As noted elsewhere, the machine is a bit of a mess, and my goal was to get the lady back up and running, with at least most bases covered, until she gets her new machine. Until then, she has her hands full with what amounts to two sets of personal files (one provided by an Apple distributor who in the end didn't impress Ginny) and she's not sure if anything new was saved to the duplicate set, so at some point she either has to take it on faith that nothing new was saved to the new folder, or that she is willing to let go of any new files in that folder. Or find a decent file compare app. There isn't enough room on her HD to maintain the duplicates forever. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "Etal" wrote in message ... Gary S. Terhune wrote: The mystery still remains as to where MSXML 4.0 SP1 came from, and If you think it is of importance to find out, and if the [msXML4*.*] files haven't been (security-)updated since originally installed. Then i would check their creation date, and then search the HardDiskVolumes for files created that date. If there are many files created that day, i'd sort files by modification-date. Unfortunately the result-list doesn't have a Creation-date column but many times, sometimes even if the application responsible for installing the files under investigation have been uninstalled, there are other tell-tale files left behind that can shed light on it. -- "They can be a terror to your mind and show you how to hold your tongue They got mystery written all over their forehead" |

Wish I could remember what that "Q" stands for (Query?)... Used to be Q*****
was the naming format for any patch, and it is still used. KB = Knowledge Base and the KB article that explained a Q patch came with the same following digits Then there's the Technet Security Bulletins named MS04-018, for instance. These various naming conventions are all used in various places to name the patch, and you never know how it's going to appear in any particular place. As noted, we replaced KB837009 with KB823353, which is why KB837009 still doesn't appear in Add/Remove Programs. In essence, it was Removed. If you'd looked in between the Updates, you'd have seen 837009 listed, but the installation of 823353 removed it.. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "CdLSRN" wrote in message ...
