Default AdAware SE & 2007

I have a friend using AdAware SE (free edition)

I'm checking here because the new AdAware 2007 version appears to be
only for Windows XP or Vista - NOT Win98, nor WinME.

On the other hand, while the AdAware site says they are no longer
supporting AAW SE after December 2007, there are Ref files for January
and February.

I've posted a request for info in the AAW forums but no replies so far.
I'm asking here as I know there are many users here that are facing this
issue too.

Does anyone still use AAW SE?
Are web updates working on WinME?
IF not, do manual updates work?

Thanks, Fred

I still use Ad-aware SE with WinME to my satisfaction.
Web updates are no longer supplied, but one can download the updates
manually as a zipfile on their website, unzipping it right into one's
Ad-aware folder, while
replacing the old one. Works like a charm for me.
See if it does for you, too.

Harry.

Thanks, Fred

Hi Fred.....I am using AAW SE on XP and downloading the updates
manually. I will continue to do so unless and until they drop SE. Then
I will drop AdAware!! Their new one is 20 megs of bloatware!!

Cheers.....Heather

Thanks for the information - looks like the manual method will work.

Thanks Heather,

We will try that and you're right, 2007 is a bear.

Ad-Aware manual updating :
http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip

Unzip the contents of the file to the Ad-Aware SE installation directory,
which usually is "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE".

If still having problems updating, go to
C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE and delete the files
"defs.ref" and "defs.ref.old"

You can create a batch file such as below which uses the GNU WGET utility and the UnZip
utility by Info-ZIP.

The following assumes Ad-aware is in; C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-aware SE

@echo off
cd "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-aware SE"
wget -N http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip
unzip -j -o defs.zip

Then you can use the system Task Scheduler to run the batch file whenever you want it to.

InfoZip UNZIP utility...
ftp://tug.ctan.org/tex-archive/tools/zip/info-zip/WIN32

WGET utility...
http://users.ugent.be/~bpuype/cgi-bi...=wget/wget.exe

David,

David,

Thanks for the info on wget - did not know that one.

I created a batch file based on yours only using PKZIP and PKUNZIP. I
also plan to add a routine to check if the defs.ref file is different
from the existing one.

Thanks a lot,

Fred

wget -N
The -N switch parameter compares the file on the PC to what's to be downloaded. It will be
obtained only if the file is newer. Thus a comparison routine isn't needed.

BTW: The following command line can also be used in the Task Scheduler to automatically
download SpyBot Search & Destroy updates if you also use SpyBot S&D.

"C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe" /autoupdate /autoclose
