Default JAVA 1.5 update 10 and ME

From: "John"

| I uninstalled 1.4.2 since it is a security risk. I went back to the
| archives and downloaded update 7 since 6 and 9 and 10 don't install. It
| installs. The icon for -offline- installers for 6 and 9 and 10 is a Java
| coffee cup. The icon for 7 is Install Shield. That makes a difference.
| Install Shield works. Strange strange strange. But now I have a Java newer
| than update 6 and I no longer have 1.4.2.
|

Try installing the Offlien EXE in Safe Mode.

Default JAVA 1.5 update 10 and ME

From: "MowGreen [MVP]"

| ALL versions of Sun java 1.5 have CRITICAL SECURITY issues up till
| Update 10 : http://secunia.com/product/4621/?task=advisories
|
| Just checked at Sun and it turns out ... Update 11 is now out.
| So, I can't say if Update 10 is secure as Sun has a disturbing tendency
| to sit on vulnerabilities and then release another Update without
| explanation.
|
| You need to check in Add/Remove Programs for the versions of the Sun JRE
| that are installed. Then open the WINDOWS\TEMP folder
| There will/may be installation folders for the various java packages
| there. On my ME system the temp install folder was named _is1204
| Most likely the naming convention will be similar, with different
| numbers. Delete all of the temp install folders AFTER uninstalling any
| JRE/J2SE listed in Add/Remove Programs.
|
| Also, WINDOWS\Application Data will contain a randomly named folder that
| contains the .msi for the java package. It/they will appear similar to
| {7148F0A6-6813-11D6-A77B-00B0D0142020}
| You could delete those folders also, if J2SE 1.5 Update 11 still will
| not install.
|
| Other than that, the only other hang up on getting it installed would be
| a stuff up in WINDOWS\INF caused by 1,000's of 0 byte *OEM.inf files.
|
| Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 11

|

Oh man... Sun is a F--king Joke !

David,

Interesting. As I mentioned the off line installer warns that the
operating system (Win Me in this case) is unsupported. I didn't bother
going further so am pleased to read that Java 6 does install and run OK on
Win Me. I was testing on a sandbox so it doesn't really need Java and I
rolled it back to having none when I finished testing. I'll give it
another go, hopefully later tonight, and this time ignore the warning and
let the install continue.

That's good to see. In which case why the h$ll do Sun have that incorrect
message when installing 6 on Win Me? Sun really do need to get their act
together as they are becoming increasingly irresponsible with their Java
packages.

There are also error messages in reference to FireFox v2.x but, it works fine in that
environment (and Opera as well).

Sun is all screwed up and /* Sun is being irresponsible. */
In one of the most recent vulnerabilities, GIF file handling buffer overflow, Sun was made
aware of the vulnerability June '06 but did not make a public statement until Jan '07.

I know a fair bit about Sun's past responsibilities including their
failure to fix vulnerabilities and allowing users to retain seriously
vulnerable older versions of Java when installing more recent versions. A
couple more years and the Sun will set and they will have joined the ranks
of DEC and the other has been manufacturer's. The trouble is that then
Java rather than going open source will probably end in the dustbin that
is Symantec.

"...the dustbin that is Symantec." -- That's harsh ! :-)

But sadly true.

The Update 10 Development Kit has the Install Shield that works on my
system. It installed JRE Update 10. Then I uninstalled the Development
Kit. Update 11 installed on the other three computers just fine so we are
pretty much up to date.

While I'm thinking about programs that won't run for me on ME...

A few weeks ago somebody mentioned that the Java site has a test to see if
you have the latest version. Back then I had update 6 and 9 was current.

I
could never get update 9 to install. Now Java is up to update 10 and it
won't install, either. I tried uninstalling first and that didn't help.

As
a matter of fact, once I uninstalled 1.5 update 6 all I could get to

install
was 1.4 update 2.

The online installer just starts over again and again. "Refresh page"
"Enable cookies" (they are enabled)
The offline installers for update 6 and update 9 and update 10 just start
the hourglass cursor for a few seconds and never do anything at all.
