What is a good DVD Player for .vob format [maybe .ifo] that's free?

I give up, again. Just want to watch this movie on the Win98SE, or
even the WinXP.

I did a google search and got everything typical that wants money
first.

I think I've got a dvd movie in .vob format, I guess the main is .ifo
which was made by converting an 8mm movie taken at Reid-Hillview
Airport in 1971. I shot the movie, played cameraman, for an acrobatic
pilot who did some great maneuvers over the Bay Area.

I'd like to view this movie. But nothing seems to view it.

I don't want to invest in a viewer, I'd just like to watch it, and show
it to others, when I want.

What is the best free DVD movie viewer?

Using that logic, if you have, say, a windows XP machine, there wouldn't be
any other groups, since everything would be running on a win XP computer!

You'll get more appropriate and detailed help in the multimedia subgroups.
And they know.

Does your computer have a DVD-ROM drive? If so, they almost always come with DVD
player software, usually either WinDVD or PowerDVD. Did you add the drive or did it
come with the computer? If you added it, the player software should be included on
the disc that came with the drive. If the drive came with the computer, the
software is probably already installed or on the software discs for the computer.

You also mention WinXP.....you can play DVDs on WinXP in Windows Media Player 9 or
10, but you need to install codecs/decoders:

On the Win98SE are CDrom 52X and CD-RW 12x. The read/write drive came
with Nero software, which has worked fairly well except for two very
irritating quirks:
1) Trying to add a small bit of information onto a CD disk, Nero finds
older folders on CD, compares them to newer folders on HD, and
concludes I want to "update" my CD with the new files - WHICH I DON'T.
Workaround by temporarily renaming the HD files, so Nero doesn't find
them.
2) Attaches itself to *ANY* video or media file permanently -
apparently. Can't change, or delete, or anything the links. No
workaround.

Nero looks like it wants to play the DVD type files, but comes up with
a message that it has no license for mpeg2 !!, wants me to spend $70 to
install the codecs. Maybe there are freely available installable
codecs somewhere.

The Win98SE's CD drive can read the file, I'm pretty sure, because I
copied the contents ot the video folder to the HD to speed up access.
The 350MB took a very long 20 minutes, too.

Neither machine has DVD hardware.

On the WinXP is a CD ?? read only. AND the XP has no internet
connection. All files have to be transferred from the Win98 to the
WinXP. I somehow "accidentally" linked the .vob extension to notepad
in the WinXP and WinXP will not allow me to delete the link in Windows
Explorer file types - not even the choice, only the ability to change
its link. Oh well, in 17 days, that will be fixed.

The WinXP Windows media Player is 8.00.00.4487 I tried playing any of
the files, but it won't. I own the copy of WinXP but have not
registered it. WinXP is NOT registered and the machine has no internet
access. I will look at the URL to see if anything is accessible. and
useable.

my abilities to find anything relevant.

MediaPlayer in the Win98. Even if it turns into a couple of GBs. I

As I said, this is historical footage, I'd like to view and enjoy. I
don't want this effort to turn into some kiind of costly monumental
effort. It's ridiculous. Everything is here to do it.

Robert, be sure to check out some of the multimedia and mediaplayer
newsgroups - there is a lot of good information there (BTDT). I don't
remember the names of them all now, but you can check that out.

Thanks, did go look. The total number and descriptions were a bit
overwhelming. It looked like the Usenet group...
comp.multmedia
....has the highest traffic and largest number of legitimate subscribers

But the best answer just came from Ingeborg, suggesting I go to vlc and
download their player, .

It's under GNU License which is ideal. Even better, it actually worked
well enough, I'm done now.
