Not sure I've ever seen more than one vid adapter listed in Device Manager,
Safe Mode or otherwise. In fact, it's perhaps the *only* thing I've never
seen duplicated.

It does happen. I've seen it a couple of times.

Best way to fix it is as you say - change to the Standard VGA driver
while in Safe Mode then delete all other entries in Device Manager.
