Default Reinstalling ME

My system crashed.......I have tried to unsuccessfully to Reinstall Me from
start up disk and original ME program disk..........
I reach the download until installin drivers...receive message:
an error has occured in HPHUC104.DLL cmdninst I believe was the line.
You could choose to ignore........but I could not choose and prog. closed
with message "Scan out of Range".
I can run in Safe Mode.......

I am thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling.........would this cure the
problem?

Default Reinstalling ME

Why did you try and reinstall Win Me if all your system did was crash?
What happened leading up to the crash that made you feel that reinstalling
was the way to go? Following the crash what happened when you next booted
your PC? Reinstalling an operating system, especially following a crash,
is about the last thing you should have to do.

You say you reinstalled Win Me using a startup disk and Win Me disk. I
take it that you were trying to reinstall Win Me over itself rather than
clean installing the operating system since the file you mention,
HPHUC104.DLL is not part of Win Me but possibly part of an HP driver of
some sort, possibly for a scanner or printer although I can find no
reference to a file with this name so it could even be malware
masquerading as an HP file.

Did you have either WMP10 or IE6 installed on your system prior to the
crash? If so these would need to have been first removed before
attempting to reinstall Win Me over itself as otherwise both will to a
degree be broken following the reinstall.

I am thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling

Uninstalling what?

would this cure the problem?

Personally I feel you should bite the bullet and format your hard drive
and clean install Win Me after which you would have to reinstall your
applications but naturally this would mean the loss of all data on your
hard disk so first you would need to backup everything of value that you
wished to retain.

Try reinstalling Win Me again as follows:
Since you can apparently boot to Safe Mode do so and then if you have WMP9
installed look for the file C:\Windows\System\wmploc.dll and rename it
wmploc.old. Then if you have IE6 installed download IE6Remov.zip from
http://www.crashfixpc.com/zipfil/IE6Remov.zip, extract the three files it
contains and read the file Readme.txt and then run both IE6REMOV.BAT and
IE6REMOV.REG. I would also uninstall any AV application you might have
installed. Now, whilst still in Safe Mode, search for the file BASE2.CAB
and note its location which is usually either C:\Windows\Options\CABS or
C:\Windows\Options\Install. If you find the file then rather than using
your Win Me CD I recommend you use the setup.exe file in the folder
containing BASE2.CAB.

You should now be ready to try reinstalling Win Me. Do this by booting
from your Win Me startup disk and choose option 4 (Minimal). When you
get the A:\ DOS prompt type the following hitting Enter at the end of
each line.
C:
CD Path
SETUP

Where Path = the path where you found the BASE2.CAB such as
C:\Windows\Options\CABS

If the install goes OK this time round my suggestion at this point would
be to download and use the Belarc Advisor
(http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) which will help you in
identifying which patches may need to be reinstalled. If you find patches
need to be reinstalled these can be downloaded from the
Windows Update Catalogue
(http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...n/default.asp). Select Win
Me, critical updates and then select and download those you need. As a
first priority install the 290700 patch for system restore if Belarc
indicates this patch is either broken or missing as this will then allow
you to use system restore if you encounter problems when installing
patches.

Don't forget to reinstall your AV application.

Best of luck. Please post back and let us know how you get on.

Default e: Reinstalling ME

Mike sorry I have been so long getting back to you, but have been wrestling
with this:
1. I did not have either WMP10 OR IE6..........
2. Found BASE2.CAB When came time to set it up, got message: access denied
So that avenue was closed.
3. I did however uninstalled all plug & play and AV programs I could find.
4. I tried to reinstall ME.....got further than before, actually to the last
shut down to reboot for last time and when it rebooted, once again got the
blank screen with message "out of scan range". I played with cntrl. key
until Windows screen appeared, but could go no further.

Thanks so much for your help this far. Probably have to take to "Geek" at
Best Buy unless you have better thought for this. I definitely do not want
to uninstall and lose valuable picture file I have ...........cannot save on
A: floppy as it is too large and will not recognise my D: drive in Safe
Mode.........

1. I did not have either WMP10 OR IE6..........

That's a real bonus and should make, or rather should have made, things
much more straight forward.

Access denied? Doing what? Windows Explorer in Win Me won't output such
a message. What I was asking you to do was to find the folder containing
the file and then using the DOS CD command move to that folder from the
initial A:\ DOS prompt. The objective being to replace A:\ by either
C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS or C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL after which you
would then enter the command SETUP.

definitely do not want to uninstall

That's good since it isn't an option. I suspect you mean that you don't

Patc,

One point. Mike made a typo and meant WMP9. You probably don't have that
either if you don't also have IE6, but better check. WMP10 is NT
systems-only (as, indeed, is WMP8 and 11).

Easy enough mistake to make Mike, I'm sure. Not helped by the no. of
different builds and the fact that WMP8 and WMP10 are NT-only while WMP9 is
for 9x too. Anyway, I know *I* need a holiday. I just wonder if TNT will
crash another plane to stop me - seems a bit extreme!

Mike, I'm back........Upon reading your second set of instructions I was able
to install SETUP from WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL
I got through to the last boot at the end of the program..........would not
reboot. Same old screen "out of scan range" I tried keeping cntrl key down
to get windows screen, but went blank............Thanks for another try....I
have certainly learned a lot.

of all data on your hard disk so first you would need to backup

is usually either C:\Windows\Options\CABS or
C:\Windows\Options\Install. If you find the file then rather than
using your Win Me CD I recommend you use the setup.exe file in the
folder containing BASE2.CAB.

You should now be ready to try reinstalling Win Me. Do this by
booting from your Win Me startup disk and choose option 4 (Minimal).
When you get the A:\ DOS prompt type the following hitting Enter at
