BootUp
We have a PC w/Windows ME someone gave to us. More and
more frequently now, when we boot up it always gets stuck after the Windows ME logo comes up at a blank screen with the cursor up in the upper lefthand corner and we have to power down and back up again (sometimes 2 or 3 times). When we do get on (using the #1 choice of 'Normal' logon when prompted) the display settings are larger than we keep them normally. Also, sometimes after that, the desktop screen will blink repeatedly until we move the mouse and sometimes freeze. We have downloaded and used 'Stinger''Spyware''Adaware' to get rid of hijack, trojan and spyware files but nothing helps...appreciate some input. Thx, M |

If you have the ME CD and can get to a desktop of some kind insert the ME CD
and reinstall ME on top of itself to try to fix the problems you're having. "M" wrote in message ... We have a PC w/Windows ME someone gave to us. You should try
A registry repair: Bootup with a startup floppy disk and at the A:\ prompt type C: (press enter) Now type: cd windows\command (press enter) Your prompt should read C:\Windows\Command, correct? Now type: scanreg /fix (space between g and /) Press enter, wait for the process to finish and reboot WITHOUT the disk. If that doesn't work, try a registry resto Bootup with a startup floppy disk and at the A:\ prompt and repeat the steps above and replace the scanreg command with: scanreg /restore (space between g and /) Press enter, select a date PRIOR to the problem, press enter, wait for the process to finish and reboot WITHOUT the disk. If you don't have a startup disk, download one from www.bootdisk.com. Any luck? Zee "M" wrote in message ... We have a PC w/Windows ME someone gave to us. Zee, no need to change to the command directory as it's in the path. Scanreg
/restore at the A:\ prompt will do. Shane "oops!!" wrote in message ... You mean the autoexec.bat from www.bootdisk.com doesn't have
path=c:\windows;c:\windows\command? Have to admit I haven't used them - I make my own. btw perhaps you should recommend the oem bootdisk? Shane "oops!!" wrote in message ... You may ne surprised.... scanreg /fix works fine from the bootdisk.com boot floppy - as it does from
the ME floppy. You need to use the With/out CD option though, rather than the Minimal one -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Shane" wrote in message ... Thx, M Either use your restore CD to take your machine back to day 1, or go out and spend $100.00 on XP and install that. I'm all of a sudden having problems on my machine with Me and I'm going to try the restore CD first. If that doesn't work, I've been told to throw the damned box out the window and get a new Dell, Compac, or anything besides emachines. Good luck |

If you are so easily upset by a problem as to feel the need to throw your
PC out of the window, what makes you think that buying a new PC and using the XP operating system is going to make any difference? -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP [2001-2004] Jim wrote: Either use your restore CD to take your machine back to day 1, or go out and spend $100.00 on XP and install that.
