Default CD ROM not working

I have just upgraded to Windows ME and now my cdrom is not
working. I can not find my CD drive anywhere on my
computer. Can I fix this? What do I do? I have tried
adding new hardware it doesn't help, I have tried
reloading WindowsME and that doesn't help. I have tried
disconnecting and reconnecting my cd drive and it doesn't
help. Is this fixable or am I stuck?

Control Panel | System | Device Manager. What do you see in the section
CD-ROM? Is your CD-ROM listed? If not then the CD possibly isn't being
detected by your bios when you switch on your PC. Can you see your CD-ROM in
the list of devices detected by the BIOS when you first switch on your PC -
the black and white plain text screen before Win Me is started?

Did you do anything to the hardware after you installed WinME? (from the
CD drive I imagine)

To begin with, go into the system BIOS and see if your CD drive is listed.

Hi Rick,

I didn't do anything to the hardware after installing it,
I did use the CD to install it but for some reason after I
installed ME I can't use the CDROM drive and can't find
it. Ok this may sound like a stupid question but how do I
go into the system BIOS to see if it is listed? And if it
is what do I do from there? Thanks for helping me.

Hi Mike,

When I go into my device manager there is no CD ROM listed
at all. And as far as when I turn my computer on I don't
seem to have everything list in black and white. So I'm
not sure if it is listed in my BIOS. But if it is listed
in my BIOS but not being detected anywhere else what can I
do? I do know the CD drive is still working because I
have tried redownloading WindowsME to see if it would make
a difference and it works then but only when starting
using the WindowsME startup diskette and the CD. But after
running WindowsME I'm back to not being able to use my cd
drive. I just don't know if this is fixable but I'm lost
without being able to use the CD drive where as I am
unable to load any other software. I have even tried
replacing the cd drive with another I had in the house but
no change.

Thanks for trying to help me

If you don't see a CD-ROM entry in the Device Manger this would suggest that
your bios is not seeing your hardware. The reason could be as simple as a
detached cable. However you say you know it is working because you have tried
downloading Win Me. I assume from that that you mean you tried reinstalling
Win Me from the CD after booting to DOS using a floppy. This should mean that
it is being detected by the bios so I don't really understand why the Device
Manager can't see it.

You can check the bios settings by going into the bios setup when you first
boot your PC. How to access the bios varies from manufacturer to manufacturer
but the required key stroke(s) are usually displayed on the initial screen
when the system first boots which is the time when you can access the bios.
You cannot do so once the system has booted.

The specific key sequence is dependent upon the BIOS vendor and/or PC
manufacturer. Some common combinations include ....
F1
F2
Del
or less often,
Ctrl + Alt + Esc
Ctrl + Alt + Ins

PS It's late here (gone 2.a.m.) so I probably won't be able to respond to any
follow up until tomorrow.

Default CD ROM not working

HI Rick,

Well I'm still not quite sure on the BIOS exactly but when
I start my computer which is a IBM it says I can hit F1
for setup. So I did that and in my system summary it
tells me CD-ROM drive installed. So it does show that my
CD-rom drive is installed, now I got a little confused
with the rest of your advice, you said I should use my
startup floppy with CD ROM help which I've done before but
it then brings me to an A: prompt what do I type from that
point. The only thing I know is if I type setup it runs
the cd and brings me back to WindowsME setup, but I don't
want to set it up again because it doesn't change
anything. I'm really sorry I know I must sound kind of
dumb and I'm glad you're baring with me through this.
I've only been using these computers for about two years
and I thought I've learned alot but apparently not nearly
enough. But like I said not sure what to do from the A:
prompt it says I can type help but I've also tried that
and it doesn't seem to help either. Thank you for trying
to help me I really appreciate it. You may email me
directly if you would like or I will check back here.

While booting, at the very end of the memory check

(when it displays the
amount of memory you have) you should tap on a specific

key that will
get you in. For generic PCs, the most common is Delete,

for big
brand-names such as IBM, Compaq, Dell, each has their own

(just to
confuse everybody else), in which case check either their

website or
your user's manual. Your only going in there to make sure

the computer
is seeing the CD drive.

After you verify that it is, you should try booting from

a WindowsME
floppy boot disk (choose the "with CD Support" Option).

Again we're
checking to see if plain old DOS can see it (be advised

that if you're
using a stock WinME EBD the CD letter will be one higher

than normal,
ie: D: will have become E: sort of thing)

Default CD ROM not working

HI Mike

I have gone into my setup and I have an IBM and I press F1
and it does show me in my sytem summary that CD-ROM Drive
is installed. So for some strange reason it is installed
and it does work because yes I have reinstalled windowsME
(thanks for correcting me..lol..) using the Floppy and CD.
But I can't find it when I am using windowsME. I'm about
to give up on these computers..I have only been really
using them for about two years and I thought I've learned
alot but apparently not. Well I'm grateful for all the
help you've given me. If you'd like to respond you may
either email me or reply on here and I will check back
soon. And where are you from that it was 2A.M. if you
don't mind me asking? I'm in Rhode Island. Thanks again.

As far as troubleshooting is concerned, we now know that it's not
something wrong with the CD drive itself (of course I could've read
through your post with MikeM where you stated that... but that would've
been much too easy :/ )

Can you go into

ControlPanel/System/DeviceManager (View by Type)
and look through for a CD drive or something which says the model of the
CD (there's an actual category called CD, but if it isn't there, check
other ones like HardDrives and HD-Controllers)

No luck there, then try "View by Connection" and root around there for
the same thing listed under "IDE Controllers" (itself under "PCI Bus")
