I am able to play a video clip with the extension wu.asx (1) time and
every successive attempt gives me a "Class not registered" error. If
I reboot, the same thing happens. I have asx as one of the file types
in mime type video/x-la-asf and have tried video/x-ms-asf, but see no
mime types with video/x-wu-xxx. Attempts at downloading the file and
creating an association for it have failed.

I am using Windows Media Player 6.4.07.1124 and have also installed
the updated codec package that lets me play WMP 9 files. I also have
the K-lite standard codec package installed, but it would not work
with this file type either.

Any way to get the additional mime types without having to go to a
higher version of media player? My version of quartz.dll is:
6.05.1.907.

Thanks

I seem to remember seeing that same message too, even with the updated
codecs as you have. I had to go to WMP9 to resolve it.

"asx" is just a wrapper for another file type. I'd examine your .asx
metafile with a text editor and determine the actual multimedia file
that it points to.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992

================================================== ==================
Advanced Stream Redirector (.asx) files, also known as Windows Media
Metafiles, are text files that provide information about a file stream
and its presentation. ASX files go beyond the simple task of defining
playlists to provide Windows Media Player with information about how
to present particular media items of the playlist.

ASX files can point to any media file type that Windows Media Player
recognizes and supports.

Here is the url I can play once:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vid...d/video.ws.asx

Here is link that I get an "unexplained failure" from:
The videos are the same.
http://web.lightningcast.com/servlet...m&mswmext=.asx

If that link is truncated, here is the same page with the embedded
app:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/fea...abarros-s.html

Someone else dug up extra links using a program and one with a wmv
extension played fine.

thanks for looking at these and hope that you can make something out
of these
as the word wrap on these pages has really gone wacky.

I am unable to save any of these vids to my computer to experiment
with, but found another asx file that played fine.

Sorry for my belated response, but K-Lite broke my WMP9 installation.
Grrrr!

Anyway, when WMP9 was working, I managed to consistently access the
audio content, but not the video content, at your first .asx URL. I
suspect that the video was missing because I didn't have the
appropriate video codec.

The .asx file has two embedded URLs, namely:

mms://wmscnn.stream.aol.com.edgestreams.net/cnnsi/swimsuit/2007/02/03/AnaBeatrizBarros.Shoot.SportsIllustrated.ws.wmv
http://wmscnn.stream.aol.com.edgestr...strated.ws.wmv

I also managed to repeatedly access both the mms and http URLs using
WMP9.

I'd suggest that you try accessing the .wmv files directly by clicking
on the above links. I'd also try pasting these links into WMP's File
- Open URL box. Depending on your results, I'd suspect a browser
problem, or a problem with your .asx wrapper. ???

BTW, I have to confess that I know very little about this subject.
That's why I have yet to resolve my new WMP9 problem.
