Default Daylight Savings Patch

Don't know what to tell you, Henry, except that the results for people who
had a lot of machines to update were mixed... Some updated the clock at the
right time, others didn't. I never figured out what might be the cause. In
your case, the system properly changed it's Time Zone setting (GMT offset),
but didn't change the clock. Weird.

Default Daylight Savings Patch

There are a number of unofficial patches out there, and I didn't check them
out. Many are for NT and 2K systems, aimed at sysadmins. Anyway, I have no
comment on any of the others. I did work out a few ways to make it even more
automated, requiring only a reboot, or even not that, but they were too
tricky for "home users", and that's who I was aiming for. I also have yet to
find my oldest MSDN disks with Windows NT4, so I couldn't test the trickier
stuff.

Maybe, if I get bored, I'll work on them some more. Who knows?

Gary, I was just curious, did you ever find any problems with that other
DST
update that had been posted last year? (from that MSFN web site; it was a
small exe file that included an INF file, but the ID numbers got a bit
confusing, as you recall).

I had used that one, and it worked fine over here, and there was no setup
routine (except after installation, it did force a reboot). But I was
just
curious what you had found in that regard.

I'm assuming yours is quite similar, but in yours I think you said you had
to initially change the time zone and then change it back to get it to
stick, and yours saves a backup of the previous settings, which this other
one doesn't. (if my memory is right)

Well, I hope for your sake this kind of thing doesn't start happening

proven to be effective, I may soon run your fix anyhow, just in the

(a) Maybe add some "IF EXIST" or "IF NOT EXIST" to it to avoid the DOS
error messages.

(b) Maybe add an additional line to the instructions that Windows won't
actually adjust the hour even if all other conditions are met-- until a
reboot is done on or after the date of change has arrived. Since he ran
the app a day late, he was thinking it would adjust immediately.

Did you reboot after applying fix? Windows won't actually change the
time-- unless a reboot is done on or after the date of switch.

Hold off on installing it, PCR. I've got new/improved versions waiting for
me to update the web pages (and test on 2K and NT4.) Be another day or two.

Default Daylight Savings Patch

OK, I'm taking it in now. Will report back after running it tonight or
tomorrow. That's really a masterful write-up of the situation at your
site-- very erudite! I'm pleased to see...

if not exist %windir%\TZ_BAK.REG start /wait regedit /e
%windir%\TZ_BAK.REG

...., by Blanton's hand, to make just one backup no matter how many times
this current time zone fix is run. After all, additional backups would
only save what this fix itself is putting into the Registry. HOWEVER,
if, as you say, the dates of the time change can change again-- then at
that time it SHOULD be this current fix's data that needs to be saved.
SO (if you haven't already thought of it), the next version of this fix
should REPLACE that line with...

if not exist %windir%\TZ_BAK01.REG start /wait regedit /e
%windir%\TZ_BAK01.REG

....And maybe figure a way to delete TZ_BAK.REG too -- or have Blanton
figure it -- & w/o an error message!

Also, I see you have included a script to run the Time/Date Properties
requestor to complete the fix-- move the change into that other Registry
key. But I thought you had qualms about that-- that some would need to
switch the zone to another one? Anyway, I extracted & ran just that
script, & it seems to have worked. It opened & shut, after changing the
date back/forth to activate the Apply button. It was just slow enough
for me to see the button was activated.

Finally, where you say: "This latest version of the update resets the
Time/Date applet automatically, however a full restart of the system is
required in some cases." I think the case (in Win98 anyway) is that
Windows will only actually make the time change during a reboot-- on or
after the date of change has arrived. At least, that's how it went on a
friend's machine-- after he took your fix a day late!

| %windir%\TZ_BAK.REG
|
| ..., by Blanton's hand, to make just one backup no matter how many
times
| this current time zone fix is run. After all, additional backups would
| only save what this fix itself is putting into the Registry. HOWEVER,
| if, as you say, the dates of the time change can change again-- then
at
| that time it SHOULD be this current fix's data that needs to be saved.
| SO (if you haven't already thought of it), the next version of this
fix
| should REPLACE that line with...
|
| if not exist %windir%\TZ_BAK01.REG start /wait regedit /e
| %windir%\TZ_BAK01.REG
|
| ...And maybe figure a way to delete TZ_BAK.REG too -- or have Blanton
| figure it -- & w/o an error message!
|
| Also, I see you have included a script to run the Time/Date Properties
| requestor to complete the fix-- move the change into that other
Registry
| key. But I thought you had qualms about that-- that some would need to
| switch the zone to another one? Anyway, I extracted & ran just that
| script, & it seems to have worked. It opened & shut, after changing
the
| date back/forth to activate the Apply button. It was just slow enough
| for me to see the button was activated.
|
| Finally, where you say: "This latest version of the update resets the
| Time/Date applet automatically, however a full restart of the system
is
| required in some cases." I think the case (in Win98 anyway) is that
| Windows will only actually make the time change during a reboot-- on
or
| after the date of change has arrived. At least, that's how it went on
a
| friend's machine-- after he took your fix a day late!

UPDATE:

I ran it. It seemed to go well. The Registry was changed, & that script
also ran. The Readme.txt file does still have the former instructions,
though, about error messages & 100 backups. Here is a summary of my
InCtrl5 report...

Keys added: 22
Values added: 113
Values deleted: 1
Values changed: 44
Files added: 1

All the keys added were new zones, such as Arabic. The value deleted
was...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Time
Zones]
@="Pacific Standard Time"

That isn't my zone, anyhow, which is Eastern.

All seems well. TZEdit reports the same as befo Eastern Time (US &
Canada) & the correct start/end dates. So, thanks.

| | | | | The updates may or may not affect Mr. Candlin at all. If
| they
| | do,
| | | then
| | | | the
| | | | | date DST ends is just as important as the date it
begins.
| One
| | or
| | | the
| | | | other
| | | | | occurs in the spring, one or the other occurs in the
fall.
| By
| | | | convention, MS
| | | | | counts the date in effect for various TZ settings as per
| | | (Gregorian)
| | | | | calendar year, so any changes should be made on or about
| Jan
| | 1,
| | | each
| | | | year. I
| | | | | will be updating my own patch yearly, some time early in
| the
| | | Holiday
| | | | season.
| | | |
| | | | Every year!? Is that for Mr. Candlin & other up-side-down
| people
| | | only?
| | | | Or are you expecting the U.S. to change the law again?
