Default MS Flight Simulator W95 error message

Flight Simulator for W95, Version 6

Installed fine in W98SE, but trying to run, get this error screen:
----
MCI Error MMSYSTEM263
This is not a registered MCI device.
----

It's installed on a Dell 700 MHZ which is offline.

What does MCI, the internet provider, have to do with Flight Sim?

Advice?

TIA

You might find a larger population of persons knowledgeable about your
inquiry in the multimedia forums/newsgroups like
multimedia.windows.mediaplayer (on the same server or browser interface).

Check you system for viruses, adware and spyware with the appropriate
utilities. One page I read in a web search did indicate that at least
one worm interfered with Flight Simulator's startup spash movie.

Run the video and sound tests in the DirectX diagnostic (DXDIAG in the
start button's "Run" dialog). Post results and system specs for others
with similar hardware to make comparisons (on your case post in
simulator and/or mediaplayer forums). Include CPU, Main RAM Qty, clock
speed, video accelerator model and driver version, sound
card/accelerator model and driver number, video accelerator RAM quantity
and DirectX version. Most of this information can be copied and pasted
from the text file the DirectX diagnostic can produce after you run the
sound and video tests.

The trouble with acronyms is that they sometimes have multiple meanings.
As an example, I have several CDs that aren't optical media. The first
two hits searching for MMSYSTEM263 on Google refer to MCI as Multi-Media
Control Interface. I'm thinking your problem is related to the simulator
attempting to play a splash movie when it starts.

No Sound, MMSystem or MCI Errors In Windows 95/98

"• You may receive one of the following error messages:
MMSYSTEM263 This is not a registered MCI device "

"CAUSE
This issue may occur if one of the Media Control Interface (MCI) Devices
is disabled, not installed, or the line for the device is missing in the
Win.ini file."

ALSO:

Someone in the simulation newsgroup/forum may recall how to disable the
splash movie play. I don't recall the details, but may be possible with
renameing the movie file OR adding/editing a line in the simulator's
configuration file (probably preffered).

Thanks, the movie issue sounds likely. although I had just loaded Madden football
97, it certainly played a video with no trouble.

Further information on disableing Flight Simulator splash movie:

Microsoft Knowledgebase Article ID : 194526
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/194526/en-us

Flight Simulators/Combat Flight Simulators: How to Disable the Opening Movie

Edit the simulation's main configuration file with the Windows Notepad
application. For most versions look for the file in the simulator's main
folder. Note that more recent flight simulator versions have dummy
configuration files for previous simulator versions so that instalation
routines for third party addon software can locate the simulator's
folder. Flight Simulator 2004's configuration file will be located in a
subfolder under the individual user's "My Documents" folder, you may
have to set windows Explorer to "show hidden files and folders" to see it.

"11. When you locate the [MAIN] section ... change the number at the end
of the following line to 0:

ShowLogo=1"

Similar procedure should work for most Combat Flight simulator and
Flight Simulator versions for windows prior to FS 9.0 / FS 2004. FS 2004
has a similar entry for a static graphic spash screen.

There are lots of video file extensions and even multiple encription
schemes that use the same extension. There COULD even be different types
used for the same game's splash screen, the in game clips and the clips
used by the onscreen help engine. On one computer MS Train Simulator
complained of a missing file and didn't display the video portion of the
splash movie (only the sound track), but Media Player would play the
video fine on the same computer.
