I had win98se and XP Pro dual booting from two seperate partitions on
the same hard drive and they both worked fine.

After a while it became necessary to reinstall win98se so I fromatted
the C drive partition ( XP is on D: ) and re-installed ( bit of a
mistake I now realise )

I have now lost the ability to dual boot and go straight into win98.
Is there any way I can rectify this problem?? I don't really want to
have to reinstall everything from scratch if I don't need to.

Help from the experts would be greatly appreciated

Thanx in advance
James

Boot from XP cd, and choose 'repair' option.

You need to boot from your XP CD. There's a possibility that it could be
fixed using the Recovery Console, but since you've deleted ALL the files on
the root of C:, chances are better if you just do a repair install as
Ingeborg suggested. Don't pick the first "R" you come to. Let it go all
the way to the "install Windows" screen and then it will give you the
option to do a repair install of the existing installation. You'll need
your Product Identification Number.

Assuming you have a retail CD (not one that wipes the system and reinstalls
the factory setup) boot from the Windows XP CD, watch for the opportunity to
repair Windows, then start up the repair console and type the following:

FIXBOOT

When done, restart the system and remove the CD.

Incidentally, Windows XP questions should be asked in a Windows XP newsgroup
where people understand the operating system in question better.

That website is extremely informative but unfortunately does not refer to
my
problem.
Just to be clear again.
I have 2 partitions one with 98se and one with XP but have lost the option
to select OS at start up.
I need to be able to recreate this somehow or even be able to boot XP from
dos would be sufficient.
Thanx for your help.
