Default Streaming audio/video doesn't work

Just got back home on my parent's computer, and it seems
to have a strange problem, although all audio/video files
on the hard drive or CDs work fine, when I attempt to
stream one from a website I get a message in WMP that
it 'cannot play the selected file.' This problem seems to
be universal to all the media players. The internet
connection, which is DSL, is working fine for all other
types of connections.

Does anyone have an idea of what could be the problem?

Thanks.
