'Tis a Kawasaki, 650cc thumper and a ball to ride. They have been making
the same bike, with very few changes, for about 20 years now. The manual I
bought covers 1987-2006.

Excellent! And a KLR650? Without looking it up, that sounds like an update
of the Kwacker I hired on Crete a decade ago (lotta fun!)?

I'd like to see that workshop. If I ever get over there...

Sigh......and you actually get ticked off if we Canadians tell

I have both a WalMart (ptui) and a few Radio Shacks (now called
"the Source") within a 10 minute drive from my home in the outer
boonies of Toronto. Also have a lot of Best Buys too. American
Eagle, Old

We can and do speak English, very few of us are bilingual.....we
are not at war with Quebec......and we don't wear snowshoes in
July. Just to cover a few misconceptions I have run across.

All of the above is *tongue in cheek*, so don't go all ballistic on

Ebonics was a fleeting thing.......I think it may still be an elective in
some colleges. My real b*tch are the 'bilingual' classes......primarily
here in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. One of the requirements to attend
should be fluency in the 'accepted' language.

It isn't any different really than the educational system here or in
Jamaica, for instance. The day education 'ended' was the day they took
away the right to physically discipline a student!!! End of story!!

In Jamaica (as in parts of the US, I understand) they don't teach English
as we know it......they teach 'ebonics' in order to be politically
correct. Hogwash!! So what happens to these students who can only spell
"yo wassup" (maybe) when they hit the working world where proper English
is spoken??

Ron's Aunt in Jamaica was a school teacher and absolutely horrified when
this started a long time ago. I am p*ssed at these mouthy kids who know
an adult cannot belt them upside the head and get away literally with
murder.

NO....education is on a downhill slide and I can't see any way of stopping
the slide. It was way better in the good ole days when we got smacked for
misbehaving. And we knew we would get worse when we got home if the
teacher called our parents. Kept us in line, I will tell you!!

Old School.
"Heirloom" wrote in message

Actually, Mike, we have a pretty good educational system. I admit that
there are areas that need attention ( I feel ), however, any student is
capable of getting as much out of it as they are willing to put in. The
real problem stems from many schools and classes being 'dumbed down' to
accommodate those that are incapable or unwilling to perform.
Fortunately, all schools are not like that. The mere fact that there are
so many foriegn students (doing exceptionally well, I might add) is a
testament to the "system" still being, as a whole, quite good.

Higher education remains quality, it is the early schooling that severely
needs revamped controls.

I often watch some of the BBC news in the morning and they say stuff
is happening in the UK when they usually mean England.
If there was a main state in the US, it wouldn't be California. If
anything it should be Texas since it's the largest state of the 48
connected states, and much more populated than Alaska, and it's right
in the middle.
As for comparing land area, that is just one measure and pretty
meaningless. More meaningful would be to compare population, GNP
and the like. Whilst the UK is 1/40th of the area of the US its
population is roughly 1/5 that of the US due to the population
density being so much higher and the UK not having large barren
areas such as Alaska. --

Stuffing more people or a bigger engine in a tiny car doesn't make it

Damn......I could NOT remember the name of those horrible overly-sugary,
greasy things you call donuts....Krispy Kremes. Yes, they opened up
here about 20 minutes south of me and we all trekked down to see what
was so wonderful about these things. NOTHING!! Shudder!! Yuck!!

But what can you expect from a country that has "chicken-fried
steak".....double shudder!! And vinegar (cider preferably) is the only
acceptable thing to put on fries.

I suppose the REAL French Fries are what the Quebeckers call "poutine"
and I am not about to try those. (Cheese curds & gravy.....sounds Texan
to me, heh)

Kissies....F.
PS.....that was Curds with a "C"......OK??

I'll have to dig out and scan the shots of me riding it on the beach and put
it up on the site. Particularly for the chicks since I don't have a shirt
on. '93 or '94 that was and the bike was probably no more than a couple of
years old. Nice holiday that. And returns us to a familiar subject, because
there are walls and signs and things on Crete still (or were a decade or so
ago, so probably still are) full of bullet holes and dents from WWII. In
fact I road to Chania on the Kwacker (and had a poor kalamari beside a ship
by the naval base).

Also I rode across the middle of the island on it, through a gorge with
sheer drops and stopped to take pics of wrecked cars down below. My sis
reminded me of that a couple of days ago by sending me shots of a mountain
pass in Bolivia that even just remembering makes me want to reach for
something to hold on to!

Went a little further on a previous visit to Crete and walked the Samaria
Gorge, which ends at Souda Bay, where the evacuation took place ('Ill Met By
Moonlight', iirc). Crete, now there's a place with an MP40 or two! ;-)

Incidentally, since we've returned to the tales of my foreign sojournes, my
next trip abroad after Crete, was Egypt. You know that thing you do, 'loom?
You know. After the chilli beans? I did that in Tutankhamun's tomb. That
was just before they closed it for 2 years, actually!

In fact, I'll forward the Bolivia e-mail to you.

My mum got me a Krispy Kreme donut on Paddington station a few months back
