I eventually disabled one of the 5 items in device manager that related to the sound card. Eventually I found out that I was using the wrong driver, one or two files, one that was meant for win3.1 when it was win98, or something like that. I've never been able to figure out how that happened, especially since I deleted all the drivers and reinstalled them several times with hardware install. I ended up just using move commands to put the write files in windows/system/ or ../system/control, or whereever they were.
