Default harddisk fail

I'm trying to run delpart to reinstall the os on a system but i keep getting
the error message "Secondary master harddisk fail" and "not ready reading
drive c:".
Is this telling me that my hardrive is fried or is there a way to
troubleshoot this problem? This occures when i boot up with a dos disk

Go to the hard disk manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostic software
respective to your hard disk. After the test, you will know if the hard disk is bad or
not..

Quantum/Maxtor - PowerMax

Western Digital - Data LifeGuard Tools (DLGDiag)
http://support.wdc.com/download/

Hitachi/IBM - Drive Fitness Test (DFT)

Seagate - SeaTools
http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/

Fujitsu - Diagnostic Tool

Samsung - Disk manager

What happen if you start up with a 98 bootdisk and use fdisk?

Before trying fdisk, type at the prompt and the press Enter:

fdisk /status **Note the space after fdisk**

If it doesn't give any information on the drive it may be fried. However, to
help verify use BootIt NG, if it doesn't see it consider the drive is
probably toast.

From what I recall you can copy it to a floppy an run the limited version in
DOS.
Boot the machine from the floppy, press cancel at the install screen and it
should boot to the DOS version.

What is the configuration of your installed hard disk drives? The secondary
master disk would not normally be accessed during installation, so either
there is no primary hard disk installed or the primary hard disk is not
partitioned or is not functioning. Unless you already have an operating
system on this machine then you should be operating with the primary hard
disk drive. Check that BIOS setup reports the correct disks and disk
settings for the drives that are actually installed in the machine.
