Win98 can't find CD drive for new mobo drivers
Is this new motherboard an exact replacement, or is it a different model? If
it's a different model, and it sounds like it is, what you have to do is remove ALL devices and have them reinstall. You do this by booting into Safe Mode and using REGEDIT to delete the entire ENUM key from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Your CDROM will be one letter after your last drive letter as seen in Safe Mode. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "David Peters" wrote in message ... When I boot up on my new motherboard, my Win98 system wants to install drivers (USB, Ethernet, some API, etc). I have the Win98 installation CD but I can't remember which drive letter is assigned to it in my Win98 system. How can I work out which drive letter to use? |

I'm fairly certain that the assigned letter will no longer be in effect after
wiping the ENUM key and reinstalling all drivers. But you may be able to determine it by looking at the CDROM drive properties in Safe Mode. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "David Peters" wrote in message ... I am fairly certain that I assigned a particular drive letter to my CD-ROM. I did this so the CD-ROM letter didn't change if I added or removed more partitions. Is there away to work out my CD-ROM drive letter from some setting in the registry which I could try and access from Safe Mode? PS: the new mobo is a different model. On 14 Dec 2004, Gary S. Why not make it simple.
Start up the machine with a 98 boot disk that has CD support and XCopy. = The purpose for using XCopy is it will copy all subdirectories and = files/folders. The basic Copy will only copy the top directory and not = subdirectories.=20 Note the drive letter assigned the CD toward the end of booting to DOS. At the Prompt type each line and press Enter after each: cd\ c:\ md c:\copy98 *Note the space after md Place the 98 CD in the drive cd\ CDdriveletter:\ *Type the actual letter assigned xcopy CDdriveletter:\*.* c:\copy98 *Note the space after *.* When finished copying remove the CD and Boot disk. Press ctrl+alt+del to reboot Now when the hardware setup wizard asks for the 98 CD, point it to = c:\copy98\win98 --=20 Brian A. Before starting the copy process enter the following command: C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE That will speed up the copying very substantially. Good luck Ron Martell Duncan B.C.
