Default cdplayer.exe won't play (all buttons greyed out but open tray)

Looked at Knowledge base. Tried:
1) Un-install, re-install of cdplayer.exe
2) Un-install,re-install of MCI.
3) My computer, Explore, Tools, Folder Options, File Types
and discovered I had about 4 entries for AudioCD. Deleted
3, and left one that points to cdplayer.exe. Still no go.
4) If I hit Set default alternately, Play is bold or not.
When it is not bold, CD opens as file and displays
track01.cda, etc. with WinAmp as symbol. Double clicking
will play track properly. When it is bold, cdplayer.exe
starts minimized, but nothing else. Maximize it and you
cannot Play or anything else because buttons greyed out.
