Can't Uninstall-Reinstall Word2000
Word hangs when I open it either from the Start Menu, from
the Application Icon, or by opening a .doc file. The .doc files open fine with TextMaker, so I'm sure it's a Word or WindowsMe problem. I decided to uninstall-reinstall Word2000, using the CD. When I do that, I enter a different user-name, as a check. When I'm done, I click on a .doc file and Word2000 hangs all over again, with my old user-name showing on the splash screen. Clearly, the installation is not coming from the CD but from somewhere in WindowsMe, perhaps in my d:\ drive back-up sustem (This is happening on a Compaq Presario 5010US.) I would appreciate getting any help in getting rid of the pesky revenant Word so that I can actually reinstall an uncorrupted application. |

Look for copies of the Word template file folder.dot and rename them
folder.old and then try opening Word again. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Joel wrote: Word hangs when I open it either from the Start Menu, from the Application Icon, or by opening a .doc file. Thanks, Mike, but it didn't work. Word still hangs.
I know that there's a Word problem -- I suspect a memory leak, because for a time I was getting "out of memory" warnings -- but there's also a WindowsMe problem, since I can't stop Windows from reinstalling internally. Out of memory warnings with Word are 99.99% of the time due to a damaged
normal.dot template file. See MS KB 307814 - "WD: Error Message: System Is Dangerously Low on Resources" (http://support.Microsoft.com?kbid=307814). I'm sorry but I have no idea as to what you mean by "there's also a WindowsMe problem, since I can't stop Windows from reinstalling internally". What reinstalls and what do you mean by internally? -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP wrote: Thanks, Mike, but it didn't work. Word still hangs. I'm sorry but I have no idea as to what you mean
by "there's also a WindowsMe problem, since I can't stop Windows from reinstalling internally". What reinstalls and what do you mean by internally? Sorry I've been unclear. What happens is this: 1) I use the CD to uninstall Word2000. 2) I use "search" to look for and delete any other files that are .exe called Word or MSWord. I then run the Disk Defragmenter and Norton's SytemCheck. 3) I then use the CD to reinstall Word2000. I don't get prompted to enter the Word 20-digit Word ID. I do get prompted to enter the 25-alphanumeric Works Suite Product Key. (I am only installing Word, none of the other components.) I get prompted to inter a user ID (Name, Organization...), and I enter one that is different from what was there before. Specifiacally, I had Joel Lastname, and I now enter Joel Lastname Family. Having finished, I permit rebooting and open Word2000, whereupon it hangs and the original username shows up on the splash screen, leading me to believe that the "new" installation is not from the CD, but from some back-up version inside Windows. That's what I mean. Joel |

OK, it's become academic, but I still wan't to know about
why it doesn't reinstall from the CD, and where it's coming from. Academic, because I finally got it through my thick head to do what you told me to in the first place. That is, I finally entered "normal.dot" into search, instead of template, normal template or whatever. Having conducted the right search, I deleted the right file, and Word opened. Now I have to get back to the settings and preferences I had used, but at least I'm not going crazier. Many thanks. Joel |

Joel,
Glad to read you've now managed to resolve your problem with Word. Sorry though that my initial post wasn't as clear as it might have been and I will try and remember to capitalise the file name next time someone hits this problem to help try and clarify the filename from the rest of my verbiage. :-).
