Problems, crashed again.....
Didn't try it in the wee hours....but will do one now. This card reader is
a Sandisk one. USB 2.0 Reader/Writer. Same as Heirloom's I guess. But I seem to be missing some USB files/dlls.....can't remember. I will write them down when I try again......ack!! I think it had to be my disconnecting it from the USB port that caused the crash. It does say in the booklet NOT to disconnect when the RED light is on......but it didn't install, so I don't know what in hell colour a light would have been. If that makes any sense. NOTE: Heirloom's attachment did not cause this.....but something is amiss on this computer and I am trying to right it and then will install again. I had to take the scanner out of the USB port to plug in the card reader.....that shouldn't have caused a problem. I only have 2 USB ports and not sure what is plugged in the other. I have to 'stand on my head' to get at the back of the CPU, which is why I didn't see the screen go black. Cheers.....Figgs "Mart" wrote in message ... Just wonder if you've tried a System Restore before you go running off to far? It *might* save you some heartache. Mart "Heather" wrote in message ... Thanks Jan......I will try that. I have a ton of them too......Frank is not bad for an old guy, is he.......bwa ha ha. He will get me for that one. Btw.....I don't have "Active Desktop" on......is that for that? Or just an ordinary monitor. Seems to be working OK now......so had to be the damn card reader!! XX Heather "Jan Il" wrote in message ... Hi Heather ;-) "Heather" wrote in message ... Hi Guys...... Don't have a fix for the other, but, here's one for when the desktop icons go all over after you've been in Safe Mode. It really works a treat for me (seems I'm always needing to go to Safe Mode fairly often) and I got soooo tired of having to redo all those dang icons, I only have about 3 dz of 'em. And I just hate the ones that get lost below the bottom taskbar. So, now I just type in 'restoredesktop' in the Run window and Bingo! Every one of the 'lil darlin's is back where they belong. This was a goody Frank Saunders on the microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlooke xpress ng gave me to hush my puling and whining about my icons going all over in Safe Mood all the time. SUCCESS!! Due to Mike M.
Hi all......
This time I took it slow and followed the advice given by Mike in a post to do with Pentax Optio software....which I could not seem to install, btw (ACDSee). It asked for USBNTMAP.SYS this time and I pointed it to BASE2.CAB on the D drive, then the Wizard said something was installed but not working properly and to click on "Update Drivers"......et voila....the card reader installed!! Yahoo, and a British "good show". (G) Mike....I save a lot of your good advice if I think I may ever need it.....and believe me, this came in handy. I also downloaded the USBWinme.exe drivers from the website you mentioned, but didn't need them. Just checked System32, Drivers sub folder......the USBNTMAP.SYS is now in there and is the original June 8, 2000 date, but created today. I just checked the properties on all of the USB.SYS files and it also created another one today.....USBSTOR.SYS.......this is the one that the other fellow was missing as well for the software..... I am typing out this explanation in case anyone else has problems with installing a card reader.....either USB or the Software.....because your previous post helped me tremendously. Many thanks, Sir Michael!! Heather "Heather" wrote in message ... Didn't try it in the wee hours....but will do one now. This card reader is a Sandisk one. USB 2.0 Reader/Writer. Have been out of sorts for most of this week but do have a "massive" e-mail under construction which I hope to be posting to your tomorrow. -- Mike Heather wrote: Hi all...... Thanks Mike......I look forward to it. Not long now.....we will be winging
o'er the Atlantic in 7 days!! And I still have a lot do do.....ack!! Sitting here sewing while running a scan, would you believe. Kind of spoils the 'geek' image, grin. A woman of many talents, I am. Problems, crashed again.....
On Sat, 29 May 2004 00:28:47 -0400, "Heather"
Hi Guys...... Hi Heather! Rebooted and decided to plug in my new card reader for the digital camera......got a few missing file or dll errors. What OS? WinME, Win2000 and XP have native support for cameras as storage devices (though if you switch the camera to WebCam mode etc. it will prompt and look for drivers etc.) but Win98xx needs drivers. I didn't write them down, but they were USB ones... For USB support, or for particular USB devices e.g. camera? I took the card reader out of the USB port.....and wham, the whole damn thing went dead on me!! Yup, can happen. You may well have that mileage when removing removable devices; better to rt-click, Eject or look for a Systray icon to safely stop the device before removing it. Have you recently installed Adaptec/Roxio (hack, spit) CDRW software? I had that basket kill USB devices stone dead - plug in memory card into SanDisk card reader, system locks up hard (as in, reset button required). Documented to be an Adaptect/Roxio screwup. Talking fairly old Adaptec (hack, spit) bundleware a la HP CDRW, in Win98SE Screen was freezing on me last night and had to reboot a couple of times. I put IconCache on because the icons were slow to 'fill in'. Time to consider http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/bthink.htm including the nested http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/virtest.htm, or even the rigorous http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/badpc.htm "whip and chair" approach. I never could write a short post.....sorry about that. Funny, I have the same problem ;-) -------------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - - No, perfection is not an entrance requirement.
