Default LAN Boot, How To Accomplish

Hi,

What I would like to be able to do from the other laptop with a
NIC, use a bootable floppy that creates a RAM drive on the HP
and transfer diagnostic tools to that RAM drive. If I was able to
boot from a bootable CD, then I can accomplish that task.

I want to perform diagnostics on the hardware and CD drive before
I put out a lot of money ($50 - $60) to buy the HDD holder/tray and it's
connector.

Compared to my other old laptops, this HP has a very fast CPU.

John

Very mysterious: you've got to tell us what exactly it is you are going
to access on this laptop, which has no HD, no FD, and a suspect CD! Does
it have a solid-state drive or something?

i,

I recently was given an HP Pavilion XT155 (similar is ZE4100)
laptop with
a missing HDD and it's holder/connector. No floppy drive.

The CD drive may be faulty because I am unable to boot from a
bootable CD
(I tried 3 different bootable CDs). The CD drive spins up after a sluggish
start, but I constantly get "Operating System Unfound". Note: In BIOS
setup,
I changed the boot order to CD drive first.

This HP laptop has PXE and LAN Boot ability which I can access by
pressing
F12 during bootup.

I would like to access this HP via another laptop that has an
internal NIC,
and use a CAT5 crossover cable, but I have never done anything like
this before (bootup via another computer's OS). Note: I have accessed other
laptops with network cards using a CAT5 crossover cable connected between
two PCs (no router).

An idea I have is to allow sharing to the A: drive with a bootable
floppy
disk in the drive on the other PC, but in order to enable access, I must
launch Windows(98se) in this other PC. Then power up the HP and press
F12 at the proper time to access LAN Boot function.

I think I am missing some information and I need your help.

Recap:

I want to access the HP laptop, even though it doesn't have a HDD,
floppy
drive, or a good working CD drive. I have a very good reason for doing
this.

Thank You in Advance, John

PS, Remove "ine" from my email address

This laptop has PXE and LAN Boot ability. I am no expert on
networks, but
I tried a laptop with an internal NIC and a CAT5 cross over cable. This
other
laptop, I allowed (share) full access to C: (bootable) drive with that
computer (Win98se) running.

On the HP, at bootup, I pressed F12 to use LAN Boot and I saw some
activity on the HP screen with "Client MAC ADDR: 00 9F 18 AA D5".
The next line was "GUID: E0A 75105-4EF5-D611-8353-00C09F18AAD5"

Unfortunately, I was unable to bootup from the other laptop, which
was already booted.

I was wondering, if I put a bootable floppy in that other laptop, and
allow full access (share) to A:, would that "work"?
