Default Clean Boot? Can't understand it.

Hi Gary,
I thought I would start a new thread because I went to the other one.
You asked why I did not do the clean boot yet. I explained that I did not
understand it. That is why I did not do it yet. Maybe I need to get one of
my grandchildren to come over from another town to explain it to me. He is
good at commputers but he cannot figure out what is wrong with mine by
talking on the phone.
I also looked in WUTemp and it was empty. I was asking my son if he had
updated to XP and he told me that he bought a new Computer because his old
one fried. and XP was on it when he bought it. He said that his computer was
acting simular to mine shortly before that happened.
I stopped at another computer shop about the computer and he said that
he could fix it . I asked him how? He told me that they would wipe the
computer and re-install Windows and charge me $100 because I had my own
disk. I told him that I have Factory Back-up. He thought it would be my best
bet use it. I told him that I do not want to do that yet.
I installed the SpyBot and Ad-aware on the computer. I will see what
happens.
Last night when I got the McAfee update manually, I did not get that
black screen when I restarted.

What a clean boot does is shut things off from starting at boot. This
allows you to see if anything that was running in the background is the
thing that is causing your problem. This article tells you how:

Default Clean Boot? Can't understand it.

1. If you managed a McAfee Update last night, is there anything still wrong
with the computer? What symptoms, if any, are you experiencing now?

2. There has been another user post here today that describes something that
sounds awfully similar to your case and involves McAfee. You mention that
your grandson also seems to be having a similar problem(?) If so, does he
also use McAfee? I'm begining to wonder if McAfee was at fault and if some
recent Update "fixed" the problem. In any case, I asked him to run some
tests. See if they show any interesting hints as to what's going on.

3. I can't write my Clean Boot procedures to be any simpler. I had to make
sure that all contingincies were covered. The only way to help you further
would be to talk you through it. Having your grandson in to do the
procedures (Clean Boot and the installation and running of the new
applications) sounds like an excellent alternative.

Hi,
No, he never used McAfee. He used AVG. These things were happening just
shortly before the cumputer died.
No, today it did the same black Screen and in addition it told me that
registry key incorrect.
Seems things are worse! If I can, I will try to talk my grandson to help
me with this clean boot and I will read the trouble shooting page.
