Problems, crashed again.....
Hi Guys......
I have been heavily using this computer for 2 days looking up hotels in England (a lot of graphics).....so after the coincidental crash with Heirloom's attachment, did a Safe Mode scandisk and defrag......it did take quite a while.....90 minutes at least. Rebooted and decided to plug in my new card reader for the digital camera......got a few missing file or dll errors. I didn't write them down, but they were USB ones....like the fellow had when trying to load the software for his Pentax. So I clicked on Skip It.....got a couple more and cancelled it. I took the card reader out of the USB port.....and wham, the whole damn thing went dead on me!! Ron said the screen just went black.....no warning...nothing. Monitor and speaker lights were still on. Checked everything and could not get the CPU to come on. Finally it did after maybe 10 or 15 minutes. Seems to be working OK now. Icons were splattered all over the screen just like when I came out of Safe Mode....and Scandisk ran. Perhaps I tried putting the new card reader on too soon after the defrag? Has to be something to do with that. Only other thing I have put on in the past few days is the IconCache. Screen was freezing on me last night and had to reboot a couple of times. I put IconCache on because the icons were slow to 'fill in'. I never could write a short post.....sorry about that. But want to make sure this 'baby' is not having major problems. I probably need new video drivers......and I am about ready to upgrade to XP!!! Scared the hell out of me, it did. As usual.....I get the weird problems. Not about to try the card reader until tomorrow......and I did keep your post Mike about those USB files being in BASE2.Cab Files and the website to download the ones you need.....quote..... Alternatively you could visit http://www.usb-drivers.com/drivers/63/63237.htm and download usb-WinMe.exe which contains WinMe's usb related files. Extract the files you want and put them in windows\system32\drivers. It was asking that they be put in that System 32 folder. And for the WinME CD which I don't have. Sob......Figgs |

A PS.......Problems, crashed again.....
On musing.....this computer seems fine and it must have been the card
reader....or something I did wrong with it. I will muse some more and try again tomorrow......but guess I will have to download those USB files. Or find them in the CAB files. Just thinking out loud, so to speak. Thanks....Figgs "Heather" wrote in message ... Hi Guys...... Don't have a fix for the other, but, here's one for when the desktop icons go all over after you've been in Safe Mode. It really works a treat for me (seems I'm always needing to go to Safe Mode fairly often) and I got soooo tired of having to redo all those dang icons, I only have about 3 dz of 'em. And I just hate the ones that get lost below the bottom taskbar. So, now I just type in 'restoredesktop' in the Run window and Bingo! Every one of the 'lil darlin's is back where they belong. This was a goody Frank Saunders on the microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlooke xpress ng gave me to hush my puling and whining about my icons going all over in Safe Mood all the time. Just wonder if you've tried a System Restore before you go running off to
far? It *might* save you some heartache. Mart "Heather" wrote in message ... Thanks Jan......I will try that. I have a ton of them too......Frank is not bad for an old guy, is he.......bwa ha ha. Problems, crashed again.....
Didn't try it in the wee hours....but will do one now. This card reader is
a Sandisk one. USB 2.0 Reader/Writer. Same as Heirloom's I guess. But I seem to be missing some USB files/dlls.....can't remember. I will write them down when I try again......ack!! I think it had to be my disconnecting it from the USB port that caused the crash. It does say in the booklet NOT to disconnect when the RED light is on......but it didn't install, so I don't know what in hell colour a light would have been. If that makes any sense. NOTE: Heirloom's attachment did not cause this.....but something is amiss on this computer and I am trying to right it and then will install again. I had to take the scanner out of the USB port to plug in the card reader.....that shouldn't have caused a problem. I only have 2 USB ports and not sure what is plugged in the other. I have to 'stand on my head' to get at the back of the CPU, which is why I didn't see the screen go black. Cheers.....Figgs "Mart" wrote in message ... SUCCESS!! Due to Mike M.
Hi all......
This time I took it slow and followed the advice given by Mike in a post to do with Pentax Optio software....which I could not seem to install, btw (ACDSee). It asked for USBNTMAP.SYS this time and I pointed it to BASE2.CAB on the D drive, then the Wizard said something was installed but not working properly and to click on "Update Drivers"......et voila....the card reader installed!! Yahoo, and a British "good show". (G) Mike....I save a lot of your good advice if I think I may ever need it.....and believe me, this came in handy. I also downloaded the USBWinme.exe drivers from the website you mentioned, but didn't need them. Just checked System32, Drivers sub folder......the USBNTMAP.SYS is now in there and is the original June 8, 2000 date, but created today. I just checked the properties on all of the USB.SYS files and it also created another one today.....USBSTOR.SYS.......this is the one that the other fellow was missing as well for the software..... I am typing out this explanation in case anyone else has problems with installing a card reader.....either USB or the Software.....because your previous post helped me tremendously. Many thanks, Sir Michael!! Heather "Heather" wrote in message ... Didn't try it in the wee hours....but will do one now. This card reader is a Sandisk one. USB 2.0 Reader/Writer. Thanks Jan......I will try that. I have a ton of them too......Frank is

Or just an ordinary monitor. I'm not sure, I've not used it for any other, mine is Active. It just says desktop. You make a copy of the current desktop arrangement by typing savedesktop in the Run window, and a copy is made like phfft! Then when you need to restore the desktop again, you just type restoredesktop in the Run window and the normal arrangement returns like phfft! Do I love it! You can download the program, and if it don't work for you, then just wax it. But, it will be good info to put in your 'Help' library in case some else can use it. Seems to be working OK now......so had to be the damn card reader!! Troubleshooting it the pits....especially when it causes all sorts of strange things to happen, that makes for even more troubleshooting. :-( Jan |
