Default Why do I need a Monitor driver

Im running Win98SE. I just got a different monitor, and temporarily
moved my former one to another computer. Everytime I boot now, it keeps
asking me to install a driver for this monitor. I dont have the driver,
but I'm sure I could find it online. Yet, WHY? The monitor works fine.
This just seems like another time waster, not to mention that I may
switch back to my old monitor.

It's annoying to have this thing popping up everytime I reboot. Aside
from going thru the whole hassle to find the driver, is there a way to
shut off this request for the driver? A monitor driver seems totally
senseless anyhow...... Just plug it in and it works!!!

It's a newer flat screen LCD monitor, so I'm sure it's not on the Win98
CD.

What happens when you go into Control Panel and select System, Device
Manager, and then select the monitor item, and then click on Properties,
Driver, and let it try to find the closest driver match already on your
system? I'm not sure if that will clear its request or not, but you could
try it.

I just tried this. The funny thing is that it still has a driver for a
monitor that died about 4 or 5 years ago. That was an old CRT monitor.
The one I've used since then was a LCD type (Dell). I never got asked
for a driver for that one. This one I just installed is a HP.

Anyhow, when I click on properties, it keeps trying to install a
different driver for that old CRT monitor. If I disable that monitor in
the settings, I dont have access to "Properties".

I guess I'm either gonna have to find the right driver, or keep clicking
"close" everytime I boot.... (annoying as hell).

Doesen't the message stop if you disable the device in device manager?

WHy not uninstall the old CRT driver?

I got it under control. I found a driver for it, but of course it
needed XP to run. I ran it on my XP machine, it installed a folder with
several files. I found it contained the .INF driver file and a few
other things, one being some program (.exe).
I copied the .INF file to a floppy, put it on my W98 machine in with
other drivers. and installed it. I assume the .exe file is some sort of
unneeded monitor tester or something (wont run in W98). I have no clue
what those other files are for, but it now works without the error msg.
I dont see one bit of difference on the screen. Like I said in the
original post, installing it was just a time waster. I did remove thart
old monitor too.

Now I suppose when I plug in my other monitor, it will bitch about that.
Sometimes i think computers bitch more than most wives, but just like
wives, most of the time they bitch over nothing. This was a good
example, I gained absolutely nothing, after wasting close to 2 hours
hunting for the driver and installing it, after having to use 2
computers to do it.....
