Network printer won't print

I have a new Dell laptop with Vista on it I can access the files on my old
Windows SE Destop through my home network via a wireless connection through a
wired Netgear Router. My old laptop (which died) used Win XP and I could use
the Epson printer (connected to Win98SE machine via LPT)to print. The Vista
system see's the Epson Printer when I want to add it as a network printer but
it won't let me add it as it keeps showing an error code: Cannot connect to
the printer: error 0x00000866. The files and printer are shared through
the network . The printer is not USB as it is an Epson Color 660 and uses
LPT.
I have tried the Epson site but they refer to physically attaching my LPT
printer to the laptop so that Vista will automatically install the drivers.
Since there are no LPT ports on the laptop that is not possible.
I tried the : Vista forum but eventually was referred here as there was not
a solution through Vista.
Does anyone have any advice short of buying a new desktop and printer?

If you could give a short explanation of what you tried/attempted as the
fixes [via the VISTA group or otherwise] it might help us determine
potential fixes.
NOTE though, that VISTA was essentially designed NOT to network with 9X. So
something's work like a charm, and others just seem to fail no matter what
you do. Key though, is the SHARING, USER, and PASSWORD settings on the
computers in addition to the normal firewall and other settings.

It may be possible to obtain a generic printer port to USB adapter to
temporarily or permanently connect the printer to the VISTA machine. Once
done the printer could then be returned [if you wanted] back to the 9X
system, and the port then changed on the VISTA machine to point to the 9X
printer. Epson offered a USB driver and adapter.

Another option is to use an actual print server.

An obvious question would be:
Did you attempt to install the printer driver into VISTA?

*IF* VISTA can see the shared printer when attached to the 9X box, then you
may be able to force an installation by using the XP compatible driver on
the installation disk [or via the Epson download link]. Attempting to use
the included VISTA default drivers will likely not work as they require
[generally] an attached device and do not contain all the "old" printer
aspects.. NOTE: VISTA requires some additional setup to network with 9X, so
make sure you understand and follow the procedures. also make sure you have
the firewall{s} setup properly for the local network

*Epson has its own spooler and de-spooler*, which is used during print
queues [local and network]. In the setup/settings for the printer, you can
define which spooler it uses, its own or Windows/DOS, and the directory
which it monitors/uses. *IF* you play around with the port and spooler
settings you MAY be able to get it to print by setting the printer to
query/monitor the VISTA spooler and/or port OR reversed in VISTA. During the
installation process [in 9X and XP, so likely VISTA as well] you should have
had the option to pre-setup the network printer.
The Epson also has a Status Monitor. The Network Printers list displays
information on printers that are connected to a network. This list is only
available when the Network Printer Monitoring option is set to Monitor in
the EPSON Status Monitor 2 Setup program. Run Setup again to change this
setting.
