I think John has been paying attention to my posts... yes, I
do have a router and a firewall. Checked the firewall today
and there was NO activity, so the router must be doing its
job, but I digress...

Didn't know they made a difference. I thought I could find
my IP address internally.

Most ISPs via cable change your IP on intermittent basis. If you have a
router, you can interrogate the router for IP assigned. See documentation
on router for this. I hope you changed the default router entry password
for security sake.

And you can, using winipcfg.

Every computer connected to the Internet *must* have an IP address.
Otherwise other computers cannot send you anything, like web pages or
email.

Many of us nowadays have a cable or DSL connection that we share
between several computers using a router. In that case the router has
the "real" IP address, and it assigns made-up addresses (that the IP
protocol definition guarantees are not in anybody's routing table) to
the computers that connect to it. (The process is called DAT, Dynamic
Address Translation.) In this case, using winipcfg will show you the
"made-up", non-routable address that your router has assigned to your
computer. Something like www.whatismyip.com will show the "real",
routable IP address that your ISP has assigned to you, and that your
router is using.

That explains all the zeros!

Something like www.whatismyip.com will show the "real",
