K-Meleon issue
I have K-Meleon 1.54 installed in Win98se. (Along with other browsers).
I have used K-Meleon for years and still like it, despite the repeated script errors (I just keep Java Script turned off). Anyhow, after years of using it, for some reason in the last several months, I keep getting a message popup that says "A new version of K-Meleon has been released - Do you want to install it now". Any newer versions do NOT work with Win98 (I tried). But this popup never pestered me in the past. Now it pops up about every 6th time I open K-Meleon. This is really annoying. I can not find anything in the settings to shut this off. But I am aware of the "about:config" use. Yet, I dont know what lines to search for in there to stop this popup. Anyone know? I'm guessing that K-Meleon did something to cause this to start popping up. I didn't change anything.... |

Anyhow, after years of using it, for some reason in the last several months, I keep getting a message popup that says "A new version of K-Meleon has been released - Do you want to install it now". I can find no mention on the internet anywhere of anything resembling that message in relation to K-Meleon, and I can find no discussion or mention of any behavior or setting that K-Meleon may have to perform automatic version or update checks. However, since K-Meleon is based on Mozilla, I believe that if you go into your configuration settings (with about:config) and search for "app.update" you should see about a dozen such entries. Specifically, look for "app.update.enabled". If you don't see that, then create it (right-click somewhere on the page, select new, boolean. The name will be app.update.enabled, and the value you want it to be is false. Any newer versions do NOT work with Win98 (I tried). You should be able to run newer versions if you install KernelEx on your win-98 system. ------------ Windows 98\ME OFFICIAL: Use K-Meleon v1.5.4 UNOFFICIAL: Use K-Meleon v1.7 with KernelEX v4.5.2 (Run in Windows 2000 compatibility mode) i have kernelex 4.5.2 installed. No ver of KMeleon above 1.5.4 is stable, just like no ver of firefox above 3.6.28 is stable. Ive tried all of this more than once and kernelex helps but it exaggerates what it can do. Sure it will run FF 5.x or was it 6.x, but if it crashes regularly, its' not working. http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/forum/read.php?1,119989 May also need Visual C++ 2005 runtime installed What does that do? http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=12102 -------------- Anyone still running Windows 98 should really have KernelEx installed. Yep, been running it for many years. I ONLY use Win98, and Win2000 also, but I will never go above that. I fought with XP and all the viruses it attracts, and got rid of it. Any newer MS operating sys is crap. I played with linux and found that thing beyond repulsive. Honestly, I dont much care. I just thought I'd see if I could remove this annoyance in Kmeleon. I wont be using the internet much longer anyhow. It used to be both fun and useful. Now that facebook has devoured the web, and the newsgroups are nearly dead, about all I use is email, and the few newsgroups that still have life. Just once and awhile I may try to find an article on the web, from what's left to it. In another year from now, the newsgroups will be entirely dead, and facebook will own the web. I will probably do all my email from my cellphone and just dump the internet completely. The only reason I still use the internet now, is because I still need a landline, and dialup internet is included free. Anything else I do on this computer, such as music, playing videos, office/word processing, and photo editing, and other programs work just fine in Win98se, even on this 15 year old computer (which I have upgraded many times, with bigger hardrives ans the maximum RAM. Any newer MS operating sys is I'm in the same position with XP as you are (and I was) with '98 (98SElite in my case). I've never had a virus on XP (and I visit some dodgy sites, though not warez and the like ones on the whole). [I still do run a 98 machine occasionally - without KernelX, so FF 2 - for just one site.] crap. I played with linux and found that thing beyond repulsive. (I used Unix 30 years ago! But you are probably using Linux in places without knowing it [isn't Android based on it for example?]. I'm sure I will be/am.) Honestly, I dont much care. I just thought I'd see if I could remove this annoyance in Kmeleon. I wont be using the internet much longer anyhow. It used to be both fun and useful. Now that facebook has devoured the web, It does seem to be everywhere, doesn't it. I don't actually hate it unlike lots of people, just have no interest in using it; however, I do get irritated in a few cases where you need a facebook ID (or whatever it's called) in order to use them. (Which I don't so I don't.) and the newsgroups are nearly dead, about all I use is People have been forecasting the death of usenet for many years! I agree probably 90% of users who've come to the internet in the last 5 years don't know of its existence, but it refuses to die. email, and the few newsgroups that still have life. Just once and awhile I may try to find an article on the web, from what's left to it. Me too; I usually succeed. (Well, in finding information. I don't think I've looked for a specific _article_ for a while.) In another year from now, the newsgroups will be entirely dead, and No (-: facebook will own the web. I will probably do all my email from my cellphone and just dump the internet completely. The only reason I Your cellphone, of course, passes your emails by some sort of magic? still use the internet now, is because I still need a landline, and dialup internet is included free. Ah, now we're beginning to see. (A) by "the internet", you mean "the web"; (B) you're talking about dial-up speed. Yes, most of the web _is_ now unusable at dialup speed, because webpage designers (with a few honourable exceptions) assume everyone has broadband; which is a pity, since it is perfectly possible to design web pages - even with images - that _are_ usable with that limitation (in fact I'd even argue they're often _more_ usable, to everybody!), but nobody can be bothered (and in many cases nowadays, probably doesn't even know how, as they use generators). Anything else I do on this computer, such as music, playing videos, office/word processing, and photo editing, and other programs work just fine in Win98se, even on this 15 year old computer (which I have upgraded many times, with bigger hardrives ans the maximum RAM. Thanks Ditto for this XP one. (Well, for the working fine; I've upgraded the RAM [to the max. 2G] and HD once each.) I'm waiting for the day (but not really!) where even XP won't be usable on the web, due to no supported browsers (meaning, if you don't have a sufficiently recent browser (and one that won't install on XP), the web pages won't render properly). Hopefully Firefox and the like won't go that route, but I sure wouldn't bet on it, as some browsers already have moved in that direction, such as IE and Pale Moon, an excellent Firefox clone). I also upgraded to 2 GB RAM, but truth be told, I was doing just fine with 1 GB (on XP), and it was probably overkill. Then again, I don't run 40 applications simultaneously - I'm more of a single task guy. :-) It is unfortunate what has happened to the newsgroups over the years. I, too, blame Facebook. I'm happy with XP now, but I think I'm stuck here with that OS. It's gone far enough (and some would argue too far). :-) |
