I have come across the "Windows 98 tenth anniversary edition"; that's
around 700 - it fills a CD to the brim. It includes quite a lot of
patches, the universal USB driver, some extra utilities, and - for some,
its main advantage - drivers for a large proportion of the hardware that
came out after 98SE.

Unfortunately, as Paul points out, 98 - though no longer available, to a
first approximation - is still Microsoft's property, so _not_
abandonware; thus the sire you found, as well as the tenth anniversary
edition and other similar, are _not_ legal.

Which is a pity. The tenth anniversary edition (made by someone called
soporific) is nicely presented.

Do you mind posting a link to this?

Unfortunately, it seems to have disappeared off the face of the Earth.
There seems to be some evidence (though some is in posts from me so
dubious) that it's also known as UBCD - that's unattended boot CD, not
to be confused with universal boot CD which is different; if you put

UBCD "soporific"

as your Google search string you'll find some things. (If you don't put
soporific in you'll get lots of links to the other UBCD.)

As well as the 98SE itself, which as we've agreed is proprietary anyway,
soporific put into the tenth anniversary a few cracked other commercial
items (such as the _full_ 98lite), so I think it was only ever available
via torrents and that sort of thing.

I do have a legal Win98 copy, but I would like to get my hands on those
patches. I did do some of the upgrades and patches to 98 back when MS
still supported it, but being on dialup, I dont think I have all of
them.

One of the links near the top of the Google search results from the
above includes links to about seven or eight "packs", but I think
they're driver packs rather than patches. I'm not sure the 10AE actually
had _that_ many patches, actually.
[]
(One of the links searching for 10AE threw up is
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!to...on/DmCIKwqzlHw
(http://bit.ly/1gZEHo9), but that just crashes both my Firefox25+addons
and myIE8, so I don't know if it's anything useful - probably not,
probably just a post _about_ it, quite possibly by me!)

Yes, I did not see the original post.

Look people - don't do stupid things like post win-98 questions to ONLY
a win-XP newsgroup.

Right Casey?

Microsoft is a criminal organization. They have been found guilty of
violating various business laws and practices around the world over the
years. So I have no problems posting links to their software, telling
people how to get old copies of their software, etc.

In this case, what you are looking for is he

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/8080...-98se-english/

The file was once called AutoPatcher98.Dec07.Final.exe, but is now
called AP2007.EXE and can be downloaded from he

http://www.mdgx.com/spx/AP2007.EXE

There was an update to that file (Dec. 2008) which is he

http://www.mdgx.com/spx/AP2008UP.EXE

There never was anything called the "Windows 98 10'th anniversary
edition". This AutoPatcher98 is what you're looking for - it was
originally started by an MSFN user named Soporific back in August 2006.

Autopatcher was superceeded by the "Unofficial Windows 98 Second Edition
Service Pack 3.33" created (or currently maintained and periodically
updated) by MSFN user "ProblemChild":

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61749-98-se-sp-332/

That is now the recommended way to take a new install of win-98se and
give it all the various enhancements, updates, patches and fixes ever
made from Micro$oft and then taken further with files made or modified
by others.

For those that are interested, I've posted file-locker links to various
MSDN cd's from 1998 through 2002, starting with Windows 95 OEM SR2 +
Original Retail version.

Here is a complete list:

Backoffice - dozens if not hundreds of CD's from at least 10 binders
full of MSDN material.

What you might think and what is legal are not the same thing; just
because they may have done criminal things, does not mean it is legal to
commit crimes against them. (In other words, two wrongs don't make a
right. Having said that, I share many of your views!)

From the above sentence, it sounds to me as if you're describing
something that you apply to a system after you've done a new install.
The - doubly illegal because as well as 98SE itself it had other things
on it - "tenth anniversary edition" was an ISO of a self-booting CD,
which if booted on a bare system, would install 98SE, including drivers
for the majority of the hardware that had come out in the intervening 10
years (including a reliable universal USB driver), as well as -
optionally, you could choose which you wanted - some other things, some
of which were cracked commercial things.

Casey posted his question about a win-98 upgrade package in
m.p.wxp.general on April 24.

This is *after* he posted a win-98 question in m.p.w98.gd on March 28 -
and he should have seen the active thread that resulted over the next
few days. That should have told him the group is still active - when it
wants to be.

There never was anything called the "Windows 98 10'th anniversary

We had this exact same discussion back in March 2011.

We determined that this torrent:

Window98.ubcd.feb2008.Ajeetgagan.torrent

Which is this file:

Windows98.UBCD.Feb.2008.iso (718 mb)

Which is called or described as:

Windows 98 Unattended Boot & Installation CD - February 2008
-Ajeetgagan

Which according to this:

http://h33t.to/torrent/65405/windows...-cd-ajeetgagan

describes itself as:

=================
Windows 98 second edition is old. Nearly 10 years old actually. These
days straight out of the box, Windows 98 needs a lot of work just to get
it to the point when you could possibly think about using it. And even
then, you'd have to do lots of research to find out what what updates
are available and what limitations still exist, in order to use it
confidently in 2008. This is a shame because there's probably still
thousands upon thousands of machines out there that don't have the
hardware to run Windows XP or Vista but could handle Windows 98 easily
due to there being so few processes running compared to a Windows XP
machine. For machines near the minimum hardware requirement for Windows
XP, in lots of cases if you setup it up right, the machine will run
faster with Windows 98 on it than with XP.

Gee, wouldn't it be good if there was a CD that defeated every single
obstacle that prevents Windows 98 second edition from being able to be
used in 2008, and it installed everything automatically without you
needing to do anything except format a hard disk, even installing
drivers for the latest chipsets, and also nVidia and ATi video cards?

This is that CD.
=================

Which contains this as the one of the installation options as listed in
a readme file:

=================
I .... Install Windows 98 - 10'th year anniversary edition ..... 1
=================

So that project had two working names:

Windows 98 Unattended Boot & Installation CD- February 2008 -Ajeetgagan

and

Windows 98 - 10'th Year Anniversary Edition

I downloaded that torrent years ago, and occasionally seed it when I'm
running utorrent.

I also re-packed the ISO file as a set of rar files which I uploaded
he

http://www.mediafire.com/download/v4...2008.part1.rar
http://www.mediafire.com/download/8b...2008.part2.rar
http://www.mediafire.com/download/nb...2008.part3.rar
http://www.mediafire.com/download/4c...2008.part4.rar

Those links still appear to work.

FYI -

Some members of MSFN (ie Drugwash, maybe others) seem to be posting and
having win-98 related conversations he

This topic was part of a thread on that site last year.

Yeah I don't like it either. But all big corporations does the same
thing. And worse, the government is also guilty. Although any judge that
rules against them then their career is over. Not good, but that is the
way it is.
