I was unable to remove from the "add/remove" progams so i'm just going to
re-install the os. What does FWIW mean? Also, thanks for the new link. I'll
try those drivers after i get my internet connection. I would try to find an
ethernet pccard but again i am trying to fix this for my brother and he was
going to throw it away. I'm already into if for $65 for parts not counting
about a week's worth of time trying to get it done. Then another $30 to ship
it back to him (he's in georgia and i'm in CA)So i'm not ready to spend any
more on it. Plus i think he is going to have "dial up" so he'll be able to us
the pc card. It gets to a point when it will make more sense for him to get a
newer used machine close to where he is. But thanks for the help. Hopefully
this will solve the problem.

(FWIW=for what it's worth.) IME (in my experience), the universal USB
drivers you had (the "Maximus Decim Generic USB Driver") can cause
problems if installed on a system which already has drivers for USB
devices on it (I've even had it break Windows altogether). Conversely,
I've installed it as more or less the first thing on a newly-rebuilt
machine (one I bought for 75 pounds - for a friend who wanted one -
which had just more or less had the OS installed), and it works fine. If
I rebuild a system from scratch, I might use it. Though I'd be more
likely to use soporific's UBCD alis "Windows 98 tenth anniversary
edition" - I've built two machines from scratch using that and it is
good, I've only had problems with trying to use it on an existing system
- and that has a universal USB driver included; I'm not sure if it's the
Maximus Decim one, though I think it is.

Though having said that, I'm pleased to see you managed to get things
sorted with the Italian-based one glee pointed you too, which I'm now
going to look at: I like the idea of one that _doesn't_ have to be
installed first, as it were.

Although the pages are in Italian, you can look at the screenshots on
some of the pages to determine how the driver is installed and
uninstalled:
http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98.html
http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_2.html
http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_3.html
http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_4.html
http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_5.html
The Download link is the "Download" button on the last page.
http://www.wintricks.it/download/wtgenusb.zip

Basically, you download the driver package (.zip file), and unzip it to
a folder where you plan to store it on the computer. Then when you
insert your flash drive, Windows will detect it and give you the option
to find the driver. Choose to have it look in the folder where you
unzipped the downloaded files, and it will see the .inf file there and
install your flash drive. Voila!

Thanks for this. (It's 6 pages now, BTW.)
