This "modem" is actually a wireless (nat) router with a single
ethernet port.

There are a number of options, but the best in my opinion is to get a
wireless USB network adaptor for pc2 to connect directly to the
"modem" wirelessly leaving the pc1 in its current configuration to use
the single ethernet port.
I got one of these a while back which I'm quite happy with
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/369188

You will then need to configure the wireless settings on the "modem"
using its web interface at http://192.168.1.1 and use those same
settings (passphrase etc) on pc2.

Of course you will have the added benefit of being able to locate pc2
away from pc1 and pc2 will not be dependent on pc1 for its Internet
connection.

A not nearly as good alternative using just wires would be to buy a
switch and a network adaptor for pc2. Then plug the switch into the
modem and the two pcs into the switch. This will allow both pc's to
connect independently of each other.

A third (the worst) alternative would be to put a network adaptor into
both pc1 and pc2, create a network bridge between the two network
adaptors on pc1 and connect the two pc's using a crossover cable as
discussed earlier.

For me it would be wireless.

So your father is using some kind of mobilephone internet
connection, but specially designed to not be taken with you..
...so very strange! But I guess their pricemodel makes it cheaper
than just connect a 3G-mobilephone to the computer with usb?

Don't they have affordable real broadband there at australia?

to limit pear2pear to 32 kbit/s I guess they spy on all traffic
to detect if the user is using bittorrent, dc++ or some of the
twenty other most popular filesharing programs... but they
can't on the new encrypted ones I hope...
(or do they just mean that it is 32kbit/s OUT, just like the
old modems had 56kbit/s but only 33kbit/s OUT?)

Anyway, with all that radio I guess using wifi too won't make
a big difference... it is probably already turned on.
cheaper of course would be to use the neighbours..... ;-)

just a question, if your dads second computer don't have any
network jack at all, it must be very old, right? (I mean network
have been built in on almost all motherboards, even in prebuilt
computers, since pentium2 at least) and he is running winXP
on that?

must be very slow.....

..
..
..

2)computer number 2, has what looks like a modem card installed, but we
figure that is no good to us at all right now.

save the modem in case you need to do some filesharing, since it
is faster :-D
(and it is always nice to have a backup solution)

3)no network cards are installed on both... which i guess means dad has
to buy two,

with your original idea that would have been true yes. perhaps we
should give up that idea....

4)are network cards cheap?

yes. they cost in my country 18AU$ (hastly converted to australian dollars
from my currency) a switch is allso cheap. a swithc with 5 jacks costs 28
AU$
here. compare to a network cable: 8 AU$ for 1 meter, 11 AU$ for 2 meter,
an usb wireless plug costs 40 AU$ here
This is of course not what they cost at your country, and it can be very
different depending on what shop or webshop you buy from, and witch model.

if dad buys some cards, does he have to instal drivers and such?

yes. drivers for the network cards.

i will leave it here for now, and hopefully get a reply before bedtime.

nightynight now :-)

hi.......
boy, things just arent going right, right now..... anyway, must type this fast as i can because
it seems my computer is playing up,, especially in last day or so.

i got both posts, but am wondering what page you both went too? the link i gave, unbeknown to me,
didnt lead to where it should.... the bl&^**y page address for their home page is same as for the
one where i wanted you to go... and from what i read in posts here, it seems that wires are
getting crossed.. please click on link again, then click on ''connecting modem'',,, Then you
will see dads set-up.

know what,, i even posted a picture of it into a binary group, just so i could show you what i
mean, and i chose a group that was early in the list..... 'alt.binaries.allmanbrothers', because i
first went there to check if it was empty,, and it was.
but after my post went, and i did a refresh or two, it finally came through then was instantly
'crossed off'...... grrrrrrrrrr. seems my isp is accepting a photo post, but killing it at the
same time. i'll never understand isps.
then i went and looked using another server, and there it was..... (problem was,, it seems that
group is full of naughty stuff..... even though my isp said it was empty wehn i checked,,
if you go there, i posted it in last 24hrs or so, before my compuyter started playing up.. and the
post is called "to teebo and jim")

this is first time i've finally got back into this group,, trouble is, its now past midnight, and
this puppy is going to bed.
please look at photo whether you use the link or use the the newsgroup... because some of the
things said in what i read confused me. things about wirless phones, and wireless this and
wireless that... dad simply has a phone, and it now plugs into the modem, you'll see when you see
the photo/post.

Lol. You're not going to be very popular on usenet if you continue to
post off topic stuff like that into random binary newsgroups.

I already looked at all the pages. The phone plugs into what is
actually a wireless router so follow my instructions (and the detailed
instructions of your ISP) to create a wireless connection from pc2 to
the "modem". This is nothing to do with the phone. That's a separate
issue altogether.

Before you go out and buy anything, use Internet Explorer on the
existing PC1 to connect to http://192.168.1.1 This is the web
interface of the router. You will probably need a username and
password. Get these from your ISP if you don't already know what they
are.

Once in, have a look at the wireless configuration options and post
some details of the available options.

Steer clear of WEP it's totally insecure these days. Select WPA-PSK
with either AES or TKIP (aes preferred) and enter a passphrase.

Make a note of all your chosen settings because you will have to use
the same settings on PC2 once you invest in a wireless adaptor. If you
get a USB adaptor as I suggested you won't have to open up the box.
Just plug it in and run its installation program.

Jim.

(note: virgins webserver seems to have problems right now so perhaps
you have to reload a couple of times when using their website today)

yes instead of normal links the web page uses javascripts that
submits a post-form, preventing you to bookmark or save a link
to the webpage you want. But if you convert the "post" form to a "get"
then you will get a webaddress like this:

http://www.virginbroadband.com.au/su...7e88UflVFLOgDM

I think I like Virgin less and less for every second...
(but I hope their space ship will be good though)

getting crossed.. please click on link again, then click on
''connecting modem'',,, Then you will see dads set-up.

yes we did. the image you are refering to are perhaps this:
http://www.virginbroadband.com.au/Im...-started-3.jpg

i could show you what i mean,

my newsprovider don't have the binary newsgroups, a better way to post
images whould be to use a website like http://bayimg.com/ to publish
pictures. I have for example put an image for you at
http://bayimg.com/eamngaABf

this is first time i've finally got back into this group,, trouble is,
its now past midnight, and this puppy is going to bed.

remember to sleep at least 8 hours every day if you want
to keep your brain bright!

anyway, the picture wasn't as important as the name&model
of the modem, we chould have searched for it :-)
But everything is fine, you gave us the address to the
internet provider that provides its own very special modems.
In this case "Option Globesurfer II" wouldn't have been
any more informative.

because some of the things said in what i read confused me. things
about wirless phones, and wireless this and wireless that...

:-)

if indeed the link
"http://www.virginbroadband.com.au/support/broadbandathome/Default.aspx"
was right (the important thing here is "virginbroadband")

then it is a thing that is not connected to you telephonewalljack
(so it is not an ADSL-modem), not connected to cabletv-jack (so
not a cable modem), and not something else connected to a jack in the
wall (like a normal networkjack from a metropolitan area network)...
....instead it communicates with VirginMobileAustralia with radio.
because that is the only connection type Virgin delivers there

dad simply has a phone, and it now plugs into the modem,

yes, and where do the electrical bits&bytes go then?
through the air! (just like your microwave oven)
there is no wire (=cable) going to the telephone/internet
-provider. it is "wireless" :-D

But you can also have another kind of "wireless": how *your* stuff
(computer or phone) is communicating with the modem.
if you buy a "wireless usb plug" and put it in one of your computers
then it will communicate with your modem through the air (and
the modem will forward the data to Virgin through the air but with
other radio frequencys that reach longer)

BUT:

Do you really have to know all this???? --- NO

Since your father have probably signed up to use Virgin
for two years (or pay 25% * 2 years for nothing) there
is no gain right now for you to worry about how your modem
works, or why the telecommunication corporation that owns
the wires in your country is so ****ing expensive that
cellphone technology can be an alternative to adsl...

what you have to do instead is:
run to the nearest computer stuff shop (or check a few
since the price can vary a lot) and buy

either: 1 USB wireless plug to the old computer
(verify that the old computer HAVE usb-ports first)
[I believe that virgin default their modems wireless
settings turned on with no security free for all
including everyone living near you, otherwise you
have to turn these settings on]

or: 2 network cables of the chapest kind, half meters is enough
1 Switch, the cheapest you can find (probably 5 jacks 100Mbit)
1 network card (PCI) as cheap as possible

the second solution requires you to:
* unplug and open the old computer (it is NOT a laptop computer, right??)
[btw, it could be nice to know what its name&model to know if it is
worth all this trouble! is it a Compaq GLX4000+ or a IBM 777/3P or ...?]

* remove one of the computers metal blanks and carefully
without rubbing it to your cat ;-) insert the network card
http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading...l-pci-card.htm
http://en.kioskea.net/contents/assem...extension.php3

* close the computer.

* place the Switch on the desk between your two computers
and connects its power cable.

* connect your old network cable between the modem and the switch,
connect one of the new cable between the new computer and the switch,
connect the other new cable between the old computer and the switch

* install a network card driver on the old computer.
Windows will find the network card when you turn on
that computer on, it should be no problem.
(If the network card came with a floppy with drivers then
perhaps windows will need it so insert into the floppydrive
before you press Next the first time.)

some websites mirroring the win98 newsgroups seems to have had problems
the latest days... some posts are missing (looks like google groups
have them all though...)

I hope you got your fathers extracomputer interneted now anyway?

btw, it looks like they changed their website now and got rid of the post-form-scripts
http://virginbroadband.custhelp.com/...etail/a_id/16/
is a bit shorter and nicer link of them :-)
