Default Unable to install USB PCI card

I tried installing a SIIG USB2 PCI card in my relatives Gateway PC running
Windows ME. After installing the card in the PC and during the boot process
an error message is displayed saying something like "unable to start
cmdinst...". After "OKing" out of that, the system then detects new
hardware and an installation wizard is started. If I go through the wizard
though, it is unable to find a driver. After completing that, the screen
just stays blank (never get the desktop).

According to the installation instructions that came with the card, I should
be able to cancel out of the wizard, and have the system finish booting to
the desktop. From there I should be able to run the installation CD that
came with the card. But since I can't get to the desk top, I can never run
the CD.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this? Since this system has several
USB1.1 ports, could there be a driver conflict? (Should I uninstall the old
drivers first?).

Thanks for any help with this.

Pat

The most likely way to correct this problem is as follows.
Boot to Safe Mode
click
Start|Run
type
SCANREG /FIX
click OK
WIndows will ask for a reboot - do so, back to Normal Mode
then run the driver install CD and see if that works.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try.

Just so I'm clear on this, I should do this after the card is installed in
the PC. Is that correct?

Either way - it should work, although you may get an error message if you
run the installer without the card present.

Default Unable to install USB PCI card

Pat wrote:-

I tried installing a SIIG USB2 PCI card... etc.

FWIW - I have installed an ALi USB2.0/Firewire Combo PCI card that required
an U2v2_1_5.exe file (included on the Driver CD) to be run first, which
installs the drivers for WinMe. The other 'usual' .inf files on the CD seem
to be unsuitable.

According to the installation instructions that came with the card, I
should be able to cancel out of the wizard,

When the location of the Driver is asked for, this file needs to be run
before it will continue. The Driver CD appears to be a sort of generic
'universal' CD to suit several (different 'manufacturers') pieces of harware
and you need to locate the correct folder/file for your specific kit

I don't know if this also relates to your card but you should re-check the
readme files on your CD to confirm that you are following the correct
procedure.

I hope this may be of some help but please ignore, if it doesn't apply to
your kit.

Good luck

Mart
